The traditional model rests on two main ideas: Reducing exposure to known carcinogens and detecting abnormalities as early as possible. Avoid tobacco, wear sunscreen, and get screened. These recommendations remain useful, yet they are incomplete. They overlook the terrain in which disease develops.
