(2019) posed the question “Can machines learn to predict the weather?” and demonstrated that data driven convolutional neural networks can forecast the evolution of the 500 hPa surface much better than the alternative dynamical model, the barotropic vorticity equation, which was used in the first numerical weather prediction (NWP) model (Charney et al., 1950).
