Comments on the experience of the Australian Carbon Tax - KZN Energy

Comments on the experience of the Australian Carbon Tax - KZN Energy

www.kznenergy.org.za — Accepting an impost (a tax) that on face value will hike the cost of living is a rather difficult thing to sell. Politically courageous would be the usual phrase from the UK comedy 'Yes, Minister'. There is a good deal of evidence to show that once we price a commodity in the market above what might have been traditional levels, especially where some discounting or subsidy from taxpayers was removed, that after some years of adjustment, such changes actually work. There are in fact many examples but perhaps the highest profile in Austrialia and mostly supported was in relation of water pricing - most Austrialians have an innate awareness of not wasting water.

Cheaper, greener motoring: carbon tax is part of the solution - by Prof Ray Wills

www.eco-business.com — There is little doubt that the 'Noughties' was the Decade of Talking the Talk on climate change. It's time to put the talk into action and make 2011 the start of the Decade of Walking the Talk. It's time to get on with it. As Julia Gillard once again commits Australia to act on global warming, one key factor is managing Australia's transport greenhouse gas emissions, a measure that will also reduce our reliance on imported fossil fuels for transportation. Australia talks and talks and talks about responses to global warming with very little substantive, whole of economy action to manage Australia's greenhouse gas emissions.

RenewEconomy — Solar delivered the fastest energy transition in history, but that is already being trumped by the stunning rollout of battery storage.

RenewEconomy — One hundred solar panels per second reflects extraordinary technical progress. A platform that simply fosters noise over truth does not.

Energy Sovereignty for Regional Australia: Protecting Farmers, Powering the Future

Energy Sovereignty for Regional Australia: Protecting Farmers, Powering the Future

farmersforclimateaction.org.au — A practical pathway to energy-secure, productive and lower-cost regional Australia This report is built around four linked propositions: 1. The current fuel system leaves agriculture exposed. Australia’s farming and regional industries remain too dependent on imported diesel and too vulnerable to fuel price shocks and supply disruption. 2. The shift to cheaper, cleaner and more locally produced energy is already underway. Across regional Australia, fixed electrification, on-farm solar, batteries, electric pumps, light vehicles and smarter energy management are already reducing operating costs and improving resilience. 3. Government policy can accelerate the flywheel. Well-designed policy can lower first-mover risk, speed commercialisation, strengthen supply chains and make the next round of adoption easier and cheaper. 4. Small and medium farm businesses must not carry disproportionate risk. The transition should be shaped so farmers gain access to cheaper and better options over time, rather than being left to absorb the highest costs and uncertainty. This report is commissioned by Farmers for Climate Action, and is an independent, evidence-based report by the author.
