Turning 104 on July 4, Lattimore woman celebrates with family

July 3, 2026, 4:58 a.m. ET Vera Gettys of Lattimore, North Carolina, will celebrate her 104th birthday on the Fourth of July. She grew up on a farm in Rutherford County without electricity, indoor plumbing, or telephones. Gettys recalls working on the farm as a child, plowing with a mule and picking cotton. For Vera Gettys, the 250th celebration of the United States will be an extra special day.
