Environmental group raises concerns about demolition plan for Bay Bridge pier
Bay City News - SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) -- A Caltrans plan to demolish the largest pier of the old eastern span of the Bay Bridge using explosives could spread concrete debris through the Bay, a staff scientist with an environmental watchdog group said today. Ian Wren, a staff scientist with Baykeeper, will raise the concerns during a Thursday meeting of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission in San Francisco.

Sheriff’s deputies searching for Cupertino burglary suspects; shelter-in-place
CUPERTINO (KRON) — Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Deputies are searching for burglary suspects in Cupertino, and a shelter-in-place has been issued on Monday, Deputy Richard Glennon said. Deputies received reports of multiple residential burglaries at around 3:45 p.m. Burglars were seen by residents fleeing the scene. One may have been armed, Glennon said. So far, two suspects have been arrested. More suspects are believed to be still at large, deputies said. No injuries have been reported.
Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg speaks at Stanford
PALO ALTO (KRON)—Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is set to speak at Stanford University Monday night. University officials say the 83-year-old will offer personal reflections on what it means to live a meaningful life. Her appearance comes after President Trump’s nomination last week of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Bader Ginsburg is the oldest justice on the court and has survived colon and pancreatic cancer.

LAKE TAHOE (KRON) —Â An avalanche in South Lake Tahoe shut down Highway 89, trapped two cars, and caused a roof to collapse at a liquor store. The California Highway Patrol says no one was injured when the avalanche covered a 200-foot stretch of Highway 89. Plus, about 12 more feet of snow fell just after 1:00 a.m. Monday between Squaw Valley Ski Resort and Tahoe City. The two drivers stuck under the avalanche were able to call 911 and firefighters rescued them in less than an hour.
17-year-old Richmond teen girl missing for nearly a week
RICHMOND (KRON) — An East Bay family is desperate for answers after a teen has been missing for nearly a week. They have turned to social media to spread the word, sharing her picture on Facebook. Seventeen-year-old Keneisha Lofton was last seen on Wednesday at the Fruitvale BART Station in Oakland. She is 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs about 168 pounds, and was wearing gray leggings, a black hoodie, and black shoes. “Love” was imprinted in gold on the leggings. She also had a black handbag.
San Jose gun buyback on Saturday
The program is aimed at reducing the number of unwanted firearms and gun violence in San Jose. It gives local residents an opportunity to voluntarily turn in their guns in exchange for gift cards. For handguns, rifles and shotguns a $100 gift card will be given and a $200 gift card for assault weapons. Guns will be checked for lost or stolen status, and if applicable will be returned to their legal owners. All other firearms will be destroyed.
Apple releases David Bowie emojis
CUPERTINO (KRON) — Apple is hoping texters and messengers will feel some “modern love” for its new line of emojis. The company is making some big changes to its emoji characters. The new batch of emojis released this week includes one honoring the late David Bowie. Bowie’s emoji includes both male and female versions of the gender-blending pop star. Also among the new batch are female judges, teachers, firefighters, astronauts, and plumbers.
PHOTOS: Sebastopol police searching for attempted Wells Fargo bank robbery suspect
SEBASTOPOL (KRON) — Sebastopol police are looking for a man who tried to rob a Well’s Fargo bank Halloween night. KRON4 has obtained photos from a surveillance camera that captured the incident. Around 5 p.m., a man approached a teller in the bank, located at 7151 Bodega Avenue, and asked for all the $50 and $100 bills. The teller refused, and the suspect ran out of the bank. He was last seen heading toward High Street and fleeing south, police said.

CHP investigating fatal incident in Watsonville
WATSONVILLE (KRON) — One person died this afternoon in Watsonville, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP first reported the incident near the corner of Loma Prieta Avenue and Airport Boulevard at 2:24 p.m. Airport Boulevard at Loma Prieta Avenue is closed and has been over two hours. CHP says there is no estimated time as to when the roadway will be re-opened. The cause for the fatality is not immediately clear.
SFPD looking for missing man from Alaska
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — Police are asking for help locating a 57-year-old man from Alaska who went missing on Thursday from San Francisco’s Western Addition neighborhood, police said Sunday. Perez Reyes is being described as a 5 feet 6 inch tall, 185 pound Hispanic man with brown eyes and brown hair. He was last seen at 2 p.m. in the 1100 block of Steiner Street, according to police. Perez was wearing a gray Fila hat, a tan and brown plaid shirt and black and gray Fila shoes.
Driver of pickup truck sought in fatal crash on Hwy 84
SAN MATEO COUNTY (BCN) — Law enforcement officers are looking for a person who was driving a 2001 Ford F-250 pickup, which collided head-on Sunday night with a 1992 Honda in unincorporated San Mateo County, California Highway Patrol officials said. The collision, which killed the driver of the Honda, was first reported at 6:57 p.m. on state Highway 84 near Sylvan Way.
Early morning apartment fire displaces 21 residents in Livermore
LIVERMORE (BCN) — Twenty-one people were displaced after a triplex apartment building caught fire early Sunday morning in Livermore. At 3:01 a.m., firefighters responded to a report of a fire at an apartment building on Chestnut Street, according to fire officials. Upon arrival, firefighters saw flames coming from the front windows and door of a second floor unit, fire officials said. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire to the unit.

White House to host annual Easter Egg Roll tomorrow
(WASHINGTON) KRON — 138 years of Easter egg hunting will continue Monday on the South Lawn of The White House. This year’s theme is “Let’s Celebrate!” and more than 35,000 people will be joining the First Family for games, stories, and, of course, the traditional egg roll. Manning, one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, smiled and waved to fans as he rode on a float with his family. Some favorite Disney characters joined the magical parade as Disneyland guests cheered for Manning and the Denver Broncos on their first super bowl championship together.
Emergency crews searching for missing Marin County surfer near Rodeo Beach
MARIN COUNTY (KRON) — Emergency crews are searching for a missing surfer in Marin County Wednesday night, according to Alexandra Picavet of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Picavet said a surfer spotted another surfer who was face down and unresponsive in the ocean. The surfer tried to pull the unresponsive surfer to shore, but the unresponsive surfer was washed out by a big wave. The incident happened just off Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands of the recreation area.
Man visiting from Sacramento County buys $638k Powerball ticket
SANTA CRUZ (BCN) — A Powerball lottery ticket purchased in Santa Cruz won $638,000 in Wednesday night’s unprecedented $1.586 billion drawing, according to lottery officials. Albert Graham, a resident of the Carmichael area in Sacramento County, purchased the winning ticket while vacationing with his wife at their condo in Santa Cruz. The ticket was purchased at a Chevron station located at 404 Soquel Avenue.
Woman killed in altercation with companion at UCSF
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — A woman died Thursday afternoon from an altercation with a man she knew on the campus of the University of California at San Francisco, university police said. The altercation occurred at 4:48 p.m. near 400 Parnassus Ave. Police took the man into custody immediately. The university’s Police Department is investigating the homicide. Anyone with information about the death is being asked to call the university Police Department at (415) 476-1414.

Flight 1939 will leave SFO at 9:55 p.m. for a return trip to Philadelphia, where it departed earlier today on the first leg of a journey that took the plane to Charlotte and Phoenix, SFO spokesman Doug Yakel said.

Correctional deputies charged with murder in jail allegedly assaulted other inmates
SAN JOSE (BCN) — Three correctional deputies due in court Friday for a murder charge in an inmate’s death allegedly assaulted other inmates earlier this year, according to court documents filed by prosecutors. Jereh Lubrin, 28, Rafael Rodriguez, 27, and Matthew Farris, 27, are charged with murder in the death of Michael James Tyree and assault under the color of authority on Juan Villa at the county’s Main Jail in San Jose, Santa Clara County prosecutors said.
Two arrested in Antioch fatal shooting last week
ANTIOCH (BCN) — A man and woman have been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting in Antioch last week, police said Thursday. Antioch police on Tuesday identified Jess Swanson, 49, as a person of interest in the Sept. 8 killing of 32-year-old Antioch resident Joshua Jacobson. Then at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, police and the U.S. Marshals Service served a search warrant at a residence in the 2800 block of Bonita Avenue, where Swanson surrendered to investigators without incident.
Man charged after rangers find state park pot garden
SANTA ROSA (AP) — A Santa Rosa man is charged with marijuana cultivation and carrying a loaded handgun after park rangers found a 5,000-plant pot garden at Salt Point State Park. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/1F4eAhY) rangers were patrolling the park’s remote areas when they spotted two men trimming dried marijuana. One fled, and the other was arrested. The 34-year-old suspect posted a $30,000 bond and was released from jail Sunday. It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer.
Another East Bay lake closed due to toxic algae
BERKELEY (KRON) — Lake Anza in Berkeley has been closed for swimming due to a bloom of toxic blue-green algae, the East Bay Regional Park District announced Thursday. The lake, located in Tilden Regional Park in the hills east of Berkeley, will remained closed pending further water-quality tests. Lake Anza joins three other lakes in the region that have all been afflicted with toxic algae. In July, park officials put a stop to swimming in Lake Temescal in Oakland due to an algae bloom.
Another earthquake strikes off the coast of Chile
ILLAPEL, Chile (KRON) – Another earthquake hits the coast of Chile according to the USGS with a magnitude of 5-5. This comes after an 8-3 quake struck the northern part of the country last night. Authorities in Chile say at least ten people were killed by last night’s quake. And the number could climb as emergency crews reach the areas that were hardest-hit. The 8-3 quake has been followed by dozens of aftershocks. In Chile’s inland cities, people slept outside overnight.
Kidnapped woman, boyfriend file claim against police, allege destroyed relationship
VALLEJO (KRON) — A Vallejo couple filed a claim for damages Thursday against the city of Vallejo, alleging its Police Department treated a home invasion and kidnapping involving them on Mare Island earlier this year as a “wild goose chase” and a “hoax.” The San Francisco-based Kerr & Wagstaffe law firm filed the claim, a precursor to a civil complaint, in Vallejo City Hall on behalf of Denise Huskins and her boyfriend Aaron Quinn.
County terminates turner construction from hospital project, files suit
SAN JOSE (BCN) — Santa Clara County has terminated an international construction company from a $300 million hospital construction project in San Jose and filed a lawsuit alleging a breach of contract Thursday. The contract with New-York based Turner Construction for a new 168-room facility and North Utility Loop at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is almost three years behind schedule, county officials said.

SUNNYVALE (KRON) — The family of an autistic boy in Sunnyvale is being sued by neighbors who say the boy is a public nuance and should not be allowed in the neighborhood. Coalition advocates taxing the “1 percent” on ‘occupy’ anniversary
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — A coalition of Bay Area organizations marked the four-year anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement today with a rally at San Francisco City Hall calling for the Robin Hood Tax, a bill that could generate billions of dollars from the sale of stocks, bonds and derivatives, according to organizers. “Our city is not for sale,” the crowd chanted, as speakers including San Francisco Supervisors Jane Kim and David Campos took to the podium to advocate for the bill.

ALAMEDA (BCN) — A gay church pastor forced to resign or be fired from a Methodist church in Michigan will speak Friday evening at a church in Alameda, according to church leaders. The talk with the Rev. Benjamin Hutchison will take place at 6 p.m. at Twin Towers United Methodist Church at 1411 Oak St. in Alameda. Hutchison resigned after the bishop of the Michigan Area of The United Methodist Church asked him whether he had a gay partner, ministry team leaders with the Alameda church said.

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — Plans to demolish the largest pier in the old eastern span of the Bay Bridge using explosives took another step forward Thursday as a bay regulatory commission unanimously granted Caltrans a permit for the project. The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission approval was one of the final permits necessary — the last being from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers — for Caltrans to move forward with the implosion on Nov.

OAKLAND (BCN) — An Oakland labor official working to organize the medical marijuana industry was indicted by a federal grand jury today in connection with allegations that he used his position for personal gain according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

WALNUT CREEK (KRON) — An East Bay high school is taking no chances after several threatening messages were found on campus. KRON 4’s Justine Waldman has this disturbing story from Walnut Creek. Extra police are on campus after students at Los Lomas High School spent a day this week not in class, but evacuated because of a threat of violence. “They had like 18 dogs sniffing for bombs,” one student said. “Half the day is us sitting on the field for hours it is terrible,” another student said.
California Public Utilities Commission approves $33.4m settlement with comcast for release of 75k unlisted numbers
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — The California Public Utilities Commission in San Francisco Thursday approved a settlement requiring Comcast Phone of California LLC to pay $33.4 million for releasing the unlisted phone numbers of nearly 75,000 customers over a two-year period. The unauthorized disclosure of 74,774 California customers’ numbers occurred between July 2010 and December 2012, according to the commission. The customers had paid between $1.25 and $1.50 per month to keep their numbers private.
Fremont police arrest two suspects for gold chain robberies
FREMONT (KRON) — Fremont Police Detectives have arrested two suspects in connection with gold chain robberies. On Friday Sept. 11 in the vicinity of Maybird Circle in the Ardenwood neighborhood two robbery incidents were reported police say. The first at 2:36 p.m. when a 43-year-old female victim was walking in the area of Maybird Circle and ShattuckDrive. She stopped at a corner and a suspect ran up to her and said “hello” and grabbed the gold chain from her neck.
District Attorney decides not to seek death penalty for Vallejo cop’s killer
FAIRFIELD (BCN) — The Solano County District Attorney’s Office will not seek the death penalty for the convicted killer of Vallejo police Officer Jim Capoot. Henry Albert Smith Jr., 41, was convicted on July 24 of fatally shooting Capoot during a foot chase in the back yard of a Janice Street residence in Vallejo after a bank robbery on Nov. 17, 2011.
Electrical fire at scene of small residential marijuana grow
SANTA ROSA (BCN) — Firefighters extinguished an electrical fire at the scene of a small residential marijuana grow Wednesday morning in Santa Rosa. The structure fire was reported in the 700 block of Alaska Drive at 11:35 a.m. Crews on scene found the garage of a wood-frame home burning and were able to stop the blaze from spreading to the living room of the home. Part of the garage was destroyed, however, according to firefighters. A small marijuana growing operation was found inside the garage.
Hawaii under tsunami watch after 8.3-magnitude Chile quake
HONOLULU (AP) – Hawaii is under a tsunami watch after an 8.3-magtidue earthquake off the coast of northern Chile. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued the watch, saying a tsunami may have been generated by Wednesday’s earthquake. If there is a tsunami, the center estimates that the first wave would arrive about 3 a.m. Thursday. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency says officials are standing by, awaiting updates from the warning center.
Novato man is the first human West Nile virus case this year
NOVATO (BCN) — A Novato man is the first human West Nile virus case in Marin County this year, the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services reported today. The 57-year-old man is recovering at home, and it’s unclear where he contracted the virus, public health officials said. Public Health Officer Dr. Matt Willis said West Nile virus is endemic in Marin County and recurs every year during the summer and fall.
