The lead naturalist Patrick Menke, was our guest on WMBD This Morning with his animal ambassador, Gilley the Western Hognose snake, to tell us about some of the things happening this season at WPP. Menke says there are new hours on Fridays. “Our Wild Nights, on Friday nights at the park, will be open late, so animal trails are open until 8 p.m. on Fridays,” he said. Menke said Critters & Cocktails classes are are also happening.

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The father of a man who was killed in a brutal home invasion 16 years ago says the broken social and justice systems that failed his son are now failing youths today. Marcus McGee Sr. remembers the early morning hours of Feb. 7, 2009, when his son, 19-year-old Mario McGee, was shot in the head and his wife, Audrey McGee, beaten. No one has been arrested in connection with his death. For the past three days, WMBD has been looking at the city’s problem with youths and guns.

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Gun violence has a disproportionate impact on African American communities, particularly young men, according to two Peorians who have been impacted by the carnage. Jonathan Romain is co-founder of ART Inc, a non-profit which uses creating art as a way to keep youths off the street and out of trouble. Most of the teens he works with are African American. He’s trying to find the answer to a question he thinks might be key to changing behaviors.
