Sensing its own permeant ion: KCNQ1 channel inhibition by external K+
Ion channels, including voltage-gated potassium Kv channels, are essential membrane proteins responsible for regulating and maintaining cellular homeostasis. These channels play central roles in controlling key physiological processes, such as excitability and rhythmicity throughout the nervous and cardiovascular systems, as well as electrolyte transport through epithelia.
Frontiers | KCNQ and KCNE Isoform-Dependent Pharmacology Rationalizes Native American Dual Use of Specific Plants as Both Analgesics and Gastrointestinal Therapeutics | Physiology
Introduction The use of plants as medicines predates human history (Inskeep, 1969; Hardy et al., 2012; Weyrich et al., 2017). Indigenous peoples of North America have used thousands of plant species as medicines (Moerman, 2009). The Ohlone and Coast Miwok peoples inhabited for more than 10,000 years land in what is now Marin County, including dense redwood forest in the Redwood Creek watershed.
Angiotensin-Receptor-Associated Protein Modulates Ca2+ Signals in Photoreceptor and Mossy Fiber cells
Abstract Fast, precise and sustained neurotransmission requires graded Ca2+ signals at the presynaptic terminal. Neurotransmitter release depends on a complex interplay of Ca2+ fluxes and Ca2+ buffering in the presynaptic terminal that is not fully understood. Here, we show that the angiotensin-receptor-associated protein (ATRAP) localizes to synaptic terminals throughout the central nervous system.
