Born in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio in the early 1970s, I was raised in a Lower Valley home within shouting distance of the Mexican border. My first years were spent at Cadwallader Elementary school, then Riverside High School, where I attained a peculiar distinction among homeboys by lettering in classic Latin.

Born and raised in this part of eastern El Paso County, the 40-year-old rides his quarter horse, “Pajarito,” or “Little Bird,” daily across the sloping hills between North Loop and Interstate 10.

Bureau of Prisons silent after Escobar demands answers on closing of La Tuna

The deadline imposed by U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar for a full explanation for the closure of the La Tuna Federal Correctional Institution has come and gone without a response from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. In a July 9 letter to the agency, Escobar posed more than a dozen questions about the closure, including whether inmates would be transferred to private prisons, how many employees would be affected and what operational challenges led to the decision.
