Beyond malaria: can intermittent preventive treatment with sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine reduce the number of small vulnerable newborns globally?
Introduction The combination antimicrobial sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine is cheap, widely available, well tolerated, and a key tool in the armamentarium of malaria control. Sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine acts as a synergistic antifolate combination, targeting sequential steps in folate biosynthesis, and is licensed for management of Pneumocystis pneumonia, toxoplasmosis, and malaria.

The REVAMP trial: key questions remain – Authors' reply
We thank Bingwen Eugene Fan, Deku Liang and colleagues, Alizée Froeliger and colleagues, Tomohiko Sato and Ryu Yanagisawa, and Qin-Yu Cai and colleagues for their feedback on our Article on the REVAMP trial.1 Fan and Liang and colleagues note that a single dose of ferric carboxymaltose (20 mg/kg up to 1000 mg) might have been inadequate, especially for women with more profound iron deficiency at baseline.
Spatial analysis of Hofbauer cell transcriptome, distribution and morphology in placentas exposed to Plasmodium falciparum
Abstract Placental infection remains a significant health burden for mothers and their babies in low-income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, where malaria transmission is intense. An increase in inflammatory biomarkers and poor vascularisation are characteristics of placentas infected with malaria. Hofbauer cells (HBCs) - placental villous macrophages of fetal origin - are one of the most abundant immune cells in the placenta.
