What do we need the future of news to be? Plato said democracies would fail due to the freedoms they enable, specifically freedom of expression. Was he wrong? Our societies are divided. Can journalism bring a society together?

This article was originally presented as a speech for an event of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute in Ottawa, Canada on September 23, 2026. The internet, for all its benefits, has disrupted both the publishing industry and public discourse in ways we find troubling. How might we address that? How do we fix our fractured societies? What do we want the future of news media to be? It might help to establish some baseline observations about the problems facing our society and its information ecosystem.

My deep exposure to the intricacies of such questions left me with a bias towards an apolitical global approach.
