Preparing for the Future
By Richard Johnson As I move around the community, I constantly find people who feel the recent election results mainly benefit certain powerful groups that had spent a lot of money to get their candidates or issues supported. When some voters, especially some first-time voters, see the results of how these powerful groups use their money, they become dismayed, and they feel that the election results are flawed and tainted.

Why is it So Important to Give Back
NNPA Newswire/BlackPressUSA Oakland Post By Richard Johnson The Formerly Incarcerated Giving Back organization was my brainchild as I struggled in that dark cold dank cell at Pelican Bay State Prison reflecting on my life, wasting practically all of it, going against the grain so-to- speak. I concluded if given the opportunity to ever get out I would bring changes not only for myself but equally for the community that I so harmed.

COMMENTARY: Elections Are Not Popularity Contests: I Stand 2 Vote for the Best Candidate
By Richard Johnson, Post News Group In choosing the right person to represent an official position, you must be mindful that your choice truly mirrors your concerns, values and, of course, your wishes for the community. Way too often we select and vote for reasons other than what is truly needed for that office. Be it palm-greasing, backdoor promises, or solely for ethnicity, we cannot afford to squander our votes.

OPINION: We Must Go to the Voting Polls
By Richard Johnson The need to exercise the right to vote was and still is a long battle that has cost precious lives at every turn throughout the struggles. Personally, I get it with those who don’t see the need to go and vote, however I came to the realization that when I and other formerly incarcerated persons refuse to utilize the power of the ballot, we basically surrender our rights, which then allows the powers that be to dictate the terms of our existence without hearing our voices.

Pro-Active vs. Reactive Approaches to Oakland’s Violence Crisis, Part 2
By Richard Johnson Violence in of itself is a reaction to various triggers that gives it life. In other words, it is a manifestation of situations that prove to be unmanageable in that moment. In order to stem it, we, as a community must recognize it before it becomes the act itself and provide a conduit that allows the cause to be redirected into positivity rather than negativity. The level of violence today is a culmination of causes over periods of time.
Training Youth on How-2 End Hostilities
By Richard Johnson The idea of How-2 end violence has its origin in the bowels of prison. The idea was the result of the principled thinking of those who have spent years and decades behind prison walls seeking ways to end the senseless wars and violence that amounted to the loss of life with seemingly no end in sight.

Despite the organisation’s swift growth, Christie-David says there’s much more to be done, as food insecurity throughout Australian communities becomes more acute. Women walking path to leadership
Exel says mentorship – particularly woman to woman – is a “key part of the puzzle” in supporting emerging women into executive leadership roles to bring their numbers closer to those of men – a challenge that has seen stuttering progress over decades. In fact, the most recent senior executive census released earlier this month by advocacy group Chief Executive Women shows progress went backwards in the past year.

COMMENTARY: The Formerly Incarcerated Giving Back Org ‘Just Serve’ on Mother’s and Father’s Days
By Richard Johnson During my years in prison, nearly every inmate looked forward to celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, especially if they knew who their father was. And for those of us who were fathers, these holidays had special family meaning. Now, as members of the formerly incarcerated population, we continue to derive special meaning for these holidays. In our minds, both days should be combined into a family day.
