'Mr. USF' Mike Griffin is a unanimous pick to chair the university's Board of Trustees

The University of South Florida Board of Trustees on Thursday elected Mike Griffin as chairman, replacing Will Weatherford, who is stepping down from the role but will remain on the board. Griffin, a USF graduate, will serve a two-year term. A unanimous selection by trustees, he had been serving as acting chair since April, when Weatherford announced he would leave the position after five years. The trustees also elected Oscar Horton to serve as vice chair for a two-year term.

Federal judge denies Leapfrog Group's appeal of decision on hospital safety grades

A federal judge on Wednesday denied Leapfrog Group’s appeal to a ruling in a lawsuit that led the nonprofit to change how it grades hospital safety factors. In March, U.S. District Judge Donald Middlebrooks of the Southern District of Florida sided with five Tenet-owned South Florida hospitals, ruling Leapfrog’s grading system could mislead the public by automatically assigning the lowest scores to hospitals that declined to participate in voluntary surveys.

Juneteenth shares spotlight with voices raising awareness of sickle cell disease

World Sickle Cell Day lands on Juneteenth each year, a calendar coincidence for a genetic blood disorder that mostly affects people of African ancestry. More specifically, however, sickle cell disease is shaped by evolution in malaria-endemic regions of the world. And perhaps as triumphantly, it is entering an era of potential cures involving bone marrow transplants and newly FDA-approved gene therapies. The problem, as always, is cost and accessibility.
