The vote ended a long-time push by Republicans who hoped for more conservative rulings, especially on issues like abortion and school funding. Roughly 62% of Kansans voted “no” on the constitutional amendment last week. “This victory is beyond gratifying,” said retired Supreme Court Justice Carol Beier, who opposed the amendment.

Kathy Hochul (D) signed a one-year executive order placing a freeze on large data center construction, a move that puts New York at the center of the national debate over artificial intelligence companies and their impact on sectors including energy grids. The order, unlike anything enacted in the country prior, will not allow permits for so-called hyperscale data centers, which are centers that use 50 or more megawatts to operate, to be granted temporarily.
