Why I’m Suing to Block the Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger (Guest Column) Original
Home Film News Jul 13, 2026 11:15am PT Getty Images Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison may think the promise of the Paramount Warner Bros. Discovery mega-merger is an offer we can’t refuse, but I’m here to say: He’s wrong. I am leading a coalition of 12 state Attorneys General in taking Paramount and Warner Bros. to court to stop this unlawful merger. The entertainment industry doesn’t exist simply to hawk movies and TV shows like they’re any other commodity.

Dava, Paramount’un bu yaz sonunda Warner Bros.’un kontrolünü ele geçirme planını sekteye uğratabilir.

Taking aim at ghost guns
I joined the District of Columbia and 19 states in filing an amicus brief supporting an important new federal rule regulating unserialized and untraceable ghost guns. Ghost guns are illegal firearms that are not serialized, which allows unlicensed manufacturers and illegal possessors to bypass standard California requirements such as firearm ownership recording and background checks, rendering them largely untraceable by law enforcement.

Attorney general issues warning about fake COVID-19 testing sites
I have issued an alert warning Californians to beware of fake COVID-19 testing locations and websites. With an increased demand for COVID-19 testing due to the recent spike in cases, scammers are exploiting vulnerable individuals looking to determine whether they have the COVID-19 virus. These unverified sites pose as legitimate companies and health-care clinics offering COVID-19 testing.

The bail industry defeated Prop. 25, California must continue criminal justice reforms Original
Our criminal justice system is supposed to be based on a fundamental premise: “innocent until proven guilty.” In reality, this basic right is not afforded to millions of low-income Californians, particularly those in communities of color. At the heart of this injustice is our money bail system. It results in untold numbers of low-income Californians having to languish in jail, sometimes for years, while they await their day in court — simply because they can’t afford to post bail or bond.
Gov. Gavin Newsom must stop direct transfers from California prisons to ICE facilities
As you read this, Californians are getting sick and dying in United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities, and it is fully within California’s power to end it. We haven’t yet, but we must now. You see, California voluntarily and wholly unnecessarily transfers Californians scheduled for release from state prisons and county jails directly into ICE custody. California is not required to do this. There is no compelling public safety reason to do this.

Historic bill for California tenants
By Rob Bonta 18th District Assemblymember The State Legislature’s passage of AB 1482 recently is a landmark legislative victory for tenants in California. It is potentially the most impactful bill for tenants ever passed in the history of the state. And it certainly comes at a critical moment. California tenants have suffered. Many are living in fear that they are just one rent-gouging increase or one discriminatory, retaliatory, or arbitrary eviction notice away from losing their home.

Four million Californians have rare diseases. Let’s make miracles possible
Around 30 million Americans, including nearly four million Californians, are affected by rare diseases. According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, there are more than 7,000 of these conditions. Around half of rare disease patients are children. If you know a family facing a rare disease, you’ve seen what they go through. Fighting one of these conditions is like having a second full-time job with the sole purpose of keeping a loved one alive.

California could lead the way on criminal justice reform, if Legislature passes latest bail reform bill
California is on the verge of one of the most transformational, paradigm-shifting criminal justice reforms in the history of the state and the nation. We now have a fundamentally broken, unsafe, and unfair money bail system that sets a price tag on liberty and fails to keep the public safe. We must change it with Senate Bill 10, which could be voted on by the state Assembly as soon as Monday afternoon.
My Word: Alameda firefighters embody the best when circumstances are at their worst
When circumstances are at their worst, our firefighters are at their best. As deadly flames raced through Wine Country this fall, residents had mere moments to react. For dozens, there just wasn’t enough time to get out. When the battle was over, it would go down in the history books as some of the most destructive wildfires California has ever seen. The fires killed 43 people, burned around 150,000 acres and destroyed close to 8,400 homes and other structures.

My Word: Assemblymember Bonta applauds Alameda council’s new cannabis regulations
Last year, with the passage of Proposition 64, California voters decided to decriminalize the adult use of cannabis. With a strong 69 percent supermajority, voters in Alameda declared that the preciously existing system was not working and ushered in a new era in statewide cannabis policy. Communities of color had been disproportionately criminalized leading to mass incarceration.

A bid to extend tenant protections to single-family homes
In the wake of the foreclosure crisis, a new rental empire has risen in California, leaving it more likely these days that you’ll be paying rent to Wall Street than to the landlady upstairs. Wall Street investment trusts such as Colony Starwood and Blackstone have bought up thousands of single-family homes and are turning them into rentals — many in low-income, communities of color — driving up prices and displacing families.
This affordable housing crisis requires bold action
In times of crisis, all options must be on the table. Many parts of California are suffering from a rental housing affordability crisis. According to a January Public Policy Institute of California report, our state has six of the nation’s 11 most expensive large metropolitan rental markets. People renting in the Bay Area and Los Angeles are feeling this crisis most acutely.

As chair of the California State Assembly Health Committee, I believe that affordable, accessible and high-quality health care coverage is a right for everyone, not a privilege. Having true access to a doctor when you need one can improve, extend and even save one's life.
