Tweak to Endangered Species Act could allow widespread development
Every ecosystem has a “keystone” species whose presence or absence affects everything else in the landscape. The legal system works in a similar way. A series of recent U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service changes aimed at the Endangered Species Act appear to consider the 1973 law as the keystone to unleashing resource development, according to both federal agency leaders and environmental activists challenging the Trump administration policies in court.

Wildlife conflict bill would fund non-lethal tactics to protect livestock
A bipartisan bill co-authored by Montana Senator Steve Daines could provide up to $20 million a year to fund nonlethal ways of stopping wild predators from killing domestic livestock nationwide. Along with California Democratic Senator Adam Schiff, Republican Daines introduced the Human-Wildlife Conflict Reduction Act on Aug. 4. The bill would promote using range riders, guard dogs, electric fencing and similar measures to protect cows and sheep from attacks by wolves and bears.

Officials from the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management told the Senate Subcommittee on Public Lands, Forests and Mining they supported Daines’ S.3527, the Montana Sportsmen Conservation Act.
