G.I.L.T. - The Comics Journal
What’s the biggest mistake you’ve ever made in your life? If you could go back in time to undo it, would you? Even knowing it would change everything else - even any potential good that came about as a result? That’s the question at the heart of G.I.L.T., our subject for the day - but, not to be disingenuous, the book itself wastes no time prevaricating.

Rob Steen: Cricket's power centre seems to have shifted Asia-wards
April 6, 2011 Cricket's power centre seems to have shifted Asia-wards - and not just economically "We are already living through the twilight of Western predominance." So reckons the historian Niall Ferguson, answering the question posed by the title of his latest TV documentary series, Is the West History? His cricketing counterparts now have every reason to believe that twilight has passed, that we are now experiencing a fresh dawn of a different hue.
Rob Steen: Why is captaincy the domain of batsmen?
Batsmen have always been preferred over bowlers for the leadership role. Is there any merit in such thinking? James Anderson: one of many who have questioned why more fast bowlers aren't considered for captaincy © Getty Images James Anderson has nothing to prove to anyone but, one assumes, himself. Nor is he one to mince words.
Five proposals to improve Test cricket
The decline in the number of instances of teams enforcing the follow-on means fewer chances of a repeat of the likes of a Headingley 1981 © PA Photos As sporting dinosaurs go, Test cricket is the diplodocus - incredibly long-necked but with no right to have existed for even half as long as it has.
One afternoon at the Cricket Writers' Club
Notes from a melodious and occasionally fantastical September song: Mitch Santner in Green Park, defying a rampant Ravi Ashwin with Gowerian elegance and Bradmanian footwork… Toby Roland-Jones at Lord's, gift-wrapping Middlesex, my Middlesex, their first County Championship since this column was introduced to the bare necessities of parenthood - and with a bloody hat-trick to boot.Ryan Sidebottom on the same summer-beaten turf, celebrating a bonus point as if it was an untainted Olympic gold…...
Rob Steen: Why Test matches should be five-dayers
Why a reduction to four days may not be quite the best idea for the future of Test cricket The 1966 West Indies series in England saw a record number of spectators, but the profits from the series were pretty low © PA Photos Twenty-two maidens on the trot. One scoring shot in 176 balls. And no, the match didn't take place during the fearful 1950s or the soporific 1960s but in Pallekele less than a fortnight ago.
Rob Steen on cricket nicknames
Cricket is particularly short of them these days.
Watching America watch cricket
Big in the Big Apple: expats filled (ish) Citi Field for the first of the All-Stars games © Rob Tringali/ESPN Maybe it's the impending anniversary of Phillip Hughes' death. Or the daily drip of allegations from Southwark Crown Court, where Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum denounced their old pal Chris Cairns with such heart-rending regret. Or those endless replays of Ben Stokes all but impaling his right shoulder on the brick-hard Sharjah outfield.
What makes a good commentator?
The best are subtle, unhurried cheerleaders who never rush to judgement but rise above the din For decades this column wished it had been born ten years earlier, in 1947 rather than 1957, and thus been old enough to put flowers in its hair and claim it only didn't go to Woodstock because of the airfare.
Rob Steen on why international cricket can't return to Pakistan yet
Age tends to harden beliefs, but it can soften them too. What was once mere conviction may evolve into rabid dogmatism - to the 18-year-old me, homophobia was a major misdemeanour; at 30 it was a crime; but by the time I was 40 it had blossomed into a fully-qualified, no-holds-barred, utterly indefensible sin. I am now a proud homophobic-phobic. Yet maturity can also, if we're lucky, transform black-and-white myopia into a keener sense of balance.
When Worcestershire lost a first-class match in a day
Losing 10 wickets in successive sessions, however elongated those passages of play may have been, takes some doing. It may also strike some as more than a little negligent. Michael Holding will hardly be alone in citing events at Old Trafford last weekend as an incontrovertible argument in favour of dividing Test cricket into two tiers, the better to prevent wheat from having to compete with chaff.
