A special thanks to the two South African policemen who assisted my wife in the centre of Johannesburg on Saturday night. My wife was returning from working late at a venue in the centre of Johannesburg and, when coming to traffic lights she approached with caution, but did not stop on any given red traffic light. This was because of her fear of being robbed. A police patrol car pulled my wife over and advised her about driving through red traffic lights.

A firefighter in South Africa died on Friday after suffering severe burns in fires that swept through part of the Garden Route, a tourist destination on the southern coast. Many residents in Knysna town and surrounding areas that were severely affected by the blazes had little access to water even as helicopters and other aircraft dumped water in an attempt to put out remaining fires. Knysna is in Western Cape province, which has been enduring drought.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A firefighter in South Africa has died after suffering severe burns in fires that swept through part of the Garden Route, a tourist destination on the southern coast. Firstcare Wildfire Support, a non-profit group, says the volunteer firefighter died in a hospital early Friday. A total of 10 deaths have been linked to a storm that hit Cape Town and the surrounding coastline on Wednesday, causing floods and high winds that fanned deadly blazes.
