Measuring children’s spatial accessibility to urban park green spaces
Abstract Children’s physical, mental and social development depends on access to green areas in the urban landscape, which varies considerably, especially in cities under rapid urbanization. The modified Huff-based variable three-step floating catchment area (MHV3SFCA) approach, which combines area attractiveness, distance decay and variability of catchment areas, was used to investigate the spatial accessibility of urban parks for children in Ardabil, a city in Iran.
Evaluation of antimicrobial resistance governance across 193 countries to inform the 2026 Global Action Plan update - Nature Medicine
|
Abstract Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a major global health threat, yet the effectiveness of national action plans (NAPs) remains uncertain. Here we developed a multidimensional One Health governance index through a structured Delphi expert consultation to evaluate AMR governance across 193 countries (2017–2022), integrating 269 policy documents, expert-weighted indicators and multinational survey and surveillance datasets.

Hydrological Extremes Heighten Vulnerability to Schistosomiasis
1 Introduction One unequivocal hallmark of climate change is the increased incidence of extreme weather and the corresponding increased variability in precipitation regimes (Douville et al., 2021; Karl & Trenberth, 2003). Triggered by these shifts, the increased frequency of more intense floods and droughts are two dualities juxtaposed in space and time for any given location—akin to a feast and famine—on a water-stressed planet.
Unraveling trends in schistosomiasis: deep learning insights into national control programs in China
OBJECTIVES: To achieve the ambitious goal of eliminating schistosome infections, the Chinese government has implemented diverse control strategies. This study explored the progress of the 2 most recent national schistosomiasis control programs in an endemic area along the Yangtze River in China. METHODS: We obtained village-level parasitological data from cross-sectional surveys combined with environmental data in Anhui Province, China from 1997 to 2015.
The Cytokine Profile in Different Stages of Schistosomiasis Japonica
1. Introduction Schistosomiasis is an important and neglected tropical disease (NTD) affecting about 250 million people in 78 countries [1]. It is a parasitic disease caused by three main species of trematode worms, Schistosoma mansoni, S. haematobium and S. japonicum, that seriously harms human health and affects social and economic development [2,3]. S. mansoni is found in Latin America, S. mansoni and S. haematobium in Africa, while S.

Different configurations of the two-step floating catchment area method for measuring the spatial accessibility to hospitals for people living with disability: a cross-sectional study
Abstract Background Poor spatial accessibility to hospital services is associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates among people living with disability. Improved methods to evaluate spatial accessibility are needed. This study measured the potential spatial accessibility of people living with disability by applying four configurations of the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method to recommend the best model for use in health services research.
Containing neglected tropical diseases: extending efforts to reduce global impact
Robert Bergquist 30 Jan 2020 Dr Robert Bergquist reflects on the World Health Organization’s Roadmap for the control of a number of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), the inauguration of ‘World NTD Day’ and the prospects of elimination of disease through health-related poverty alleviation. The 30th January 2020 is a decisive day in the fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).
The God of Plague: a long farewell - On Health
Recent estimates indicate that around 250 million people currently have schistosomiasis, a waterborne disease caused by parasitic flatworms. This corresponds to an average of 3 million disability-adjusted life years – considerably higher than 20 years ago. Against this background, it is difficult to avoid asking why control efforts for such a widespread disease are so inadequate that the World Health Organization (WHO) has listed it among the ‘neglected tropical diseases’.
Elimination of schistosomiasis: the tools required
Long-term, well-structured control programmes make a difference. The Japanese control programme is proof that not only elimination, but even eradication in country, can be achieved by long-term, uninterrupted activities. As made clear by Kajihara and Hirayama [26], once the epidemiology had been determined, elimination was a straightforward affair with the last new human infection reported in 1977 [27].
Controlling schistosomiasis with praziquantel: How much longer without a viable alternative?
Pre-emptive action is urgently needed to assure that chemotherapy does not dwindle, particularly not in low- and middle-income countries where schistosomiasis inflicts a disproportionately high burden of disease. Judging from the veterinary field, development of drug resistance in helminthiasis can be swift [ 35 ] and the situation with respect to malaria is a constant reminder of this risk [ 36 ]. The WHO road map for the global control of the NTDs includes schistosomiasis [ 30 ].
