When asked to deliver the 2026 Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) Osterberg Memorial Lecture, which honours Professor Jorg Osterberg, a pioneer and innovator in geotechnical engineering, I immediately thought of the 100-story John Hancock Tower in Chicago. The building is within 20 miles of the Northwestern University campus where Professor Osterberg was on the faculty at the time of its construction.
