Summary and Reviews of The Book of Birds by Robert Macfarlane
BookBrowse Review BookBrowse Macfarlane's signature evocative metaphors run consistently throughout the book.
Robert Macfarlane on How to Love Birds in a Time of Loss
In The Book of Birds, Macfarlane and illustrator Jackie Morris reckon with a world losing its avian abundance and ask how wonder, attention, and naming might still help hold that loss at bay. A great thinning of the skies is underway. There are 3 billion fewer birds in North America than half a century ago. Five hundred million fewer in Europe. Seventy-three million fewer in Britain. Worldwide, over 60% of bird species are in decline.
Machine learning in automatic detection of chordoma signature, postoperative residuals, and prognosis of skull base chordomas
Abstract Skull base chordomas are rare, locally invasive tumors that remain a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We developed a machine-learning (ML) radiomics model to (i) distinguish chordoma from chondrosarcoma and skull base background, (ii) differentiate true postoperative residual tumor from treatment-related changes, and (iii) predict 2-year progression-free survival (PFS). In this retrospective, dual-center study, 61 patients underwent surgery between 1998 and 2023.

What have some of us being reading? Books of 2025 Original
My own books of the year are: Don’t Forget We’re Here Forever by Lamorna Ash (Bloomsbury, 2025), in which the 20-something author explores a variety of expressions of Christianity from Christianity Explored at All Souls, Langham Place, YWAM in Harpenden, to Iona, and the shrine at Walsingham. This is wonderfully written, from a Gen-Z young adult open to Christian faith. The Place of Tides by James Rebanks (Penguin, 2024) is Rebanks’ third book.

A river runs through us
A river flows at scripture’s beginning. With its source in paradise, this river flows out of Eden before branching into the four rivers that water the then known world. Along with the misty springs that bubble up from the garden’s ground, the freshly created world speaks a fundamental truth: no water, no life. Another river flows at scripture’s end. Placed in the new heaven and new earth, this river flows straight from the throne of God and down the main street of holy Jerusalem.
Virginia Evans and the Art of Writing Letters
Occasionally, a book comes into your life that is a revelation. And The Correspondent by Virginia Evans was one of these books for us. A masterful epistolary novel in which the protagonist, a retired lawyer named Sybil, corresponds with…well, anyone and everyone. It’s an incredible read. Trust us. Don’t miss this great conversation with a wonderful writer. And to sweeten the pot? We also talk to The Vermont Bookstore. Join us.

This Cloud Forest Should Not Exist
A cloud-forest is a rivermaker. Nautilus Members enjoy an ad-free experience. Log in or Join now . Cloud-forests form at higher altitudes than rainforests: typically between 3,000 and 8,000 feet above sea level, in steep landscapes of peak, ridge, and valley. The elevation means that cloud-forests are cooler than rainforests, and the drama of their topography means that their rivers are fast, shallow, clear, and rockbedded, compared to the muddier, slower rivers of rainforests.
EMC's Summer Reads for You and Your Students
Lovers of quiet, detailed – dare I say, Proustian – novels will find plenty to get their teeth into in the first part of this planned quartet. Set in rural Malaysia in the 1990s, it centres around the relationship of two teenage boys from different backgrounds, as they navigate their way through a rapidly modernising society. Set in Zanzibar, this makes for an interesting comparison with Tash Aw’s South, also on this list.
We gave corporations rights. Why not rivers?
Home Vol 35 No 12 We gave corporations rights. Why not rivers? 19 June 2025 Macfarlane frames the legal personhood of rivers as an extension of the Rights of Nature movement and, more broadly, a contemporary evolution of the rights revolution. Just as nation-states gradually extended rights to once-marginalised human beings, like women and people of colour, legislatures have increasingly recognised natural elements as intrinsically valuable and worthy of legal protection.
If Rivers Had Rights
I deas move in space and time. They swim like fish. They drift like pollen. They migrate like birds. Sometimes their movement carries them right around the world, and they find new niches in which to flourish. One day in October 1971, a young academic called Christopher Stone was giving a seminar on property law at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. It had been an intense class; the students were tired and distracted. Pens were being twirled, windows stared out of.
'Is a River Alive?' explores what we should learn from rivers
We Minnesotans are almost all lucky enough to live near a river. The Mississippi, Minnesota, Red, Pigeon, Cascade, Crow, St. Croix, St. Louis, Whitewater, Zumbro and thousands of other waterways flow through our state. Rivers have shaped our landscape, economy and history. Through the eons, humans have worshiped them, abused them and sometimes saved them. Rivers run through our art and our dreams. Who among us has not sat by a river to contemplate its mysteries? Well then. Are rivers alive?

In early May, an orange floral fire burned across Northern California river banks in celebration: an explosion of poppies, goldenrod and other native plants, marking the first spring after the biggest de-damming project in U.S. history liberated the Klamath River from its confinements. The recovery of the wider Klamath watershed began last year with the demolition of four dams, and the free-flowing river now provides roughly 400 miles of restored habitat for salmon and steelhead trout.

Is a River Alive?: Read an exclusive excerpt from Robert Macfarlane’s new book
Dusk falling fast on the coast. A night wind rising. Chennai flashes and blinks behind us. Huge surf breaks and withdraws, breaks and withdraws, filling the air with its roar. Somewhere a dog-pack howls. In the black ink of the ocean, night travellers are approaching shore, drawn and directed by instincts etched deep into their brains by evolution’s needle. Sea-mist shows grainy where arc-light falls. Salt in the nose, stinging lips. A barn owl is hunched on the skeleton of an abandoned building.

Book review: Robert Macfarlane’s wondrous Is A River Alive? maps the lives and deaths of water

Is a River Alive?
At its heart is a single, transformative idea: that rivers are not mere matter for human use, but living beings – who should be recognized as such in both imagination and law. Inspired by the activists, artists and lawmakers of the young ‘Rights of Nature’ movement, Macfarlane takes the reader on an exhilarating exploration of the past, present and futures of this ancient, urgent concept. Is a River Alive?
Is this river alive? Robert Macfarlane on the lives, deaths and rights of our rivers
The Mutehekau Shipu in Quebec.Photograph: Robert Macfarlane If you find it difficult to think of a river as alive, try picturing a dying or dead river. This is easier. We know what this looks like. We know how it feels. A dying river is one who does not reach the sea. A dying river’s fish float belly-up in stagnant pools. Swans on the upper Thames near Windsor now wear brown tidemarks on their snowy chest feathers, showing where they have sailed through sewage.
“Vital in every sense” - Is a River Alive? By Robert MacFarlane
‘What on earth happened to the world? What’s happened to a world where animism is a rarity, or is seen as ‘weird’? What is ‘weird’ about seeing the extent and vitality of the life that surrounds us, the lives with which each of our own little lives is entangled?’ (Naturalist, writer, educator and campaigner Yuvan Aves) The title of Robert Macfarlane’s long-awaited new book might seem deceptively simple. Is a river alive?
Robert Macfarlane on the Beauty and Urgency of Nan Shepherd’s The Living Mountain
In Praise of the Scottish Author’s Poetic, Universalist Parochialism The Cairngorm Mountains of north-east Scotland are Britain’s Arctic. In winter, storm winds of up to 170 miles per hour rasp the upper shires of the range, avalanches scour its slopes and northern lights flare green and red above the summits. Even in high summer, snow still lies in the deepest corries, sintering slowly into ice.
IS A RIVER ALIVE?
Are rivers alive? Macfarlane delivers a lucid, memorable argument in the affirmative. The accomplished British nature writer turns to issues of environmental ethics in his latest exploration of the world. In 1971, a law instructor asked a musing-out-loud question: Do trees have legal standing?
