Have you ever used a typewriter?

I did use a typewriter as I began my work as a journalist - both an Underwood and a Royal. In later times I used an IBM Selectric.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means telling the best truth possible.

Why did you become a journalist?

I had an interest from a very young age - I even wrote and printed a kind of newspaper for my younger siblings when I was about ten.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The New Yorker.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

With my travel writing, it is that I get free trips and accommodations. I do not accept these.
