The front gates of Columbia University at Broadway and 116th Street On a typical day, excluding Sundays, there are six to eight food trucks, trailers, and carts parked along Broadway from 116th to 118th Streets, right in front of Columbia University’s main gates. Ten years ago, Chinese carts dominated, but now they are only part of a more varied landscape. Maybe a decline in the Chinese student population in the age of Trump might account for this.

Shanghai and Hunan were soon to follow, as the Upper West Side also became a hotspot for Sichuan. But these emerging restaurants still offered mainly Cantonese food, with a few watered-down regional dishes. Indeed, Sichuan peppercorns were technically illegal in the US until 2005, an ingredient without which Sichuan food is almost unthinkable.

He’d just completed a set at a comedy club in a tenement basement a few blocks distant. We stopped at a nondescript storefront at 9 Chatham Square across the street from Confucius Plaza, as a bus idled in front, set to transport gamblers to Atlantic City.
