Here be dragons (and damsels)

It’s a female Southern hawker – a species described by the British Dragonfly Society as a “very inquisitive dragonfly that will often come close.” After about ten minutes of aerial manoeuvres that bamboozle both me and my camera, it climbs higher and zooms off. Luckily, I’ve managed to photograph one of these restless fliers before in a less challenging pose – resting in a tree.

Breathtaking butterflies and magnificent moths

But this isn’t the same species as the mating couple I encountered earlier. Its wings are paler blue and peppered with tiny black dots. It’s a holly blue – a lover of bushes and trees, rather than the grassland that attracts the common blue. It’s time to leave this wonderful little wildlife oasis and head back home. I’ve watched some fascinating and beautiful insects, although I’m slightly disappointed not to have seen Kiplingcotes’ poster species – the marbled white butterfly.
