ROD MCCULLOM specializes in reporting on the intersections of science, technology, biomedicine, violence, crime and poverty. McCullom's focus areas include reporting new research and developments around artificial intelligence, biometrics, biotechnology, brain and cognition, genetics, infectious disease, and, the science of crime and violence. What was your first job as a journalist?

An intern at "The Chicago" a monthly magazine on race and urban affairs. They offered me a six months training. Then went to the LA Times.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Absolutely. I learned to type on a typewriter and took typing class in high school.

How is social media changing news?

It's forcing the news to be delivered faster. It's also created a demand for more diversity and intersectional analysis and content.
