In the contemporary wine world, choosing to age wine in a barrel is understood as a means of influencing  its style. But for most of its history, the barrel’s purpose was solely concerned with storage. Rod Phillips attempts to pin down the historical moment when the barrel became an integral part of winemaking aesthetics. Two images, almost three centuries apart, illustrate the longer-term history of barrels.
