QnAs with Piet Borst: Winner of the 2023 Lasker–Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science | Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
In recognition of his 50-year career of scientific discovery and leadership, biochemist Piet Borst has won the 2023 Lasker–Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science. Borst studied medicine in his native Amsterdam, Netherlands, before completing a PhD in biochemistry in 1961. He was a professor of biochemistry at Amsterdam University from 1965 to 2005.

Live Imaging Reveals that the First Division of Differentiating Human Embryonic Stem Cells Often Yields Asymmetric Fates
The first lineage option that pluripotent hESCs face is to differentiate into ectoderm or the primitive streak (Murry and Keller, 2008xDifferentiation of embryonic stem cells to clinically relevant populations: lessons from embryonic development. Murry, C.E. and Keller, G. Cell. ; 132: 661–680 Abstract | Full Text | Full Text PDF | PubMed | Scopus (983)See all ReferencesMurry and Keller, 2008) (Figure 1Figure 1A).
In vivo lineage tracing reveals Axin2-expressing, long-lived cortical thymic epithelial progenitors in the postnatal thymus
In the thymus, cortical and medullary thymic epithelial cells (TECs) are instrumental for generating a repertoire of functional T cells. Hence, there has been much interest in the ontogeny of TECs. While medullary TEC (mTEC) and bipotent progenitors have been identified, the existence of a cortical TEC (cTEC) progenitor remains ambiguous. In this study, we used lineage tracing based on a target gene of the Wnt pathway, Axin2.
Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling, Disease, and Emerging Therapeutic Modalities
Wnt Proteins Are Growth Factors, but What Distinguishes Wnts from Other Signals? TCFs Are the Effectors of the Wnt Cascade There are multiple Wnt genes in any animal genome—19 in mammals for example (http://web.stanford.edu/group/nusselab/cgi-bin/wnt/)—raising the question of specificity: do individual Wnts have unique or overlapping functions?
