Christine Kafando was the first person to talk publicly about living with HIV in Burkina Faso and helped to set up one of the first community organisations for people living with HIV in the landlocked west African country. But by 2003, she felt the need for a new organisation focused on the needs of mothers and children. “There was no treatment and the youngest children died quickly”, she told The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health.
