Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The holiday has been celebrated for more than 150 years and became a federal holiday in 2021. Vance Beach, executive director of the Black Alliance for Social Empowerment, said the organization has been planning Juneteenth activities in Medford since 2020. He said the event has grown steadily each year. “People are starting to catch on,” Beach said.

Shasta County won't defend voter-approved Measure B in court

Shasta County supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday not to defend Measure B against a lawsuit filed by the California attorney general. The charter amendment, approved by voters in the June primary, would make sweeping changes to the county's elections system. Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit sued shortly after the election, arguing several provisions violate California law, including requiring hand-counting of ballots and restricting voting by mail.
