2018년에 IGN으로 첫 출근을 했을 때, “네가 꼽는 최고의 게임은 뭐야?”라는 질문을 받았다. 그때의 대답은 지금도 변함없는데, 바로 ‘파이널 판타지 택틱스’다. 90년대에 플레이스테이션으로 처음 했을 때, 직업 시스템과 개성 있는 캐릭터들, 그리고 쉽게 답을 내릴 수 없는 스토리에 완전히 매료됐다. 추가 콘텐츠는 있었지만 성능 문제가 심각했던 PSP 리마스터인 ‘사자전쟁’, 터치 조작만 지원했던 모바일 버전을 거쳐, 2025년에는 원작에 걸맞은 새로운 버전이 나올 준비가 충분히 되어 있었다. 스퀘어 에닉스가 ‘이발리스 크로니클즈’로 그 기대에 부응했을까? 몇 가지 아쉬운 점은 있지만, 답은 확실히 그렇다. 이 글과 비슷한 콘텐츠파이널 판타지 택틱스: 이발리스 크로니클즈 - 공식 오프닝 영상 턴제 전술 RPG 장르가 지난 25년 동안 큰 발전을 거듭했음에도 불구하고, 원작 ‘택틱스’는 여전히 지금도 빛나는 명작 중 하나다. 미래의 역사가가 전해주는 이야기 구조는 시작부터 강렬하다.
