Rose Dodd’s Biography
A composer falling increasingly more into writing about music, because I can't not!...
I write books, reviews, articles..
An experienced composer of primarily ambient electronic/instrumental works, in 2016, Perspectives on the Music of Christopher Fox (Routledge), was followed by Writing to Louis Andriessen (Lecturis), in 2019. Both books Edited and initiated by Rose Dodd. I secured two distinct publishers for two distinct book project outcomes, both within the niche area of contemporary musical composition, integrated with elements of biography, personal testimony of the composers themselves, but also composer and academic colleagues. The Fox book necessitated rigorous peer review processes, and for the Andriessen book, I secured Studio Joost Grootens' collaboration for bespoke book design for Louis' celebratory 80th birthday book with the inclusion of many archival documents and photos from his personal archive, but also of longtime collaborators Icebreaker and Asko|Schönberg ensembles. Of note: inclusion of personal correspondence between Louis and Cathy Berberian.
Based in Amsterdam 2018-2022, a book proposal, Reinbert De Leeuw, Aesthetic Butterfly Effect, awarded substantial funding support forthcoming.
Soon, too, new creative compositional works of my own to follow.
During the pandemic I was involved in advising and working on the theses final proof reading of two composer/performer colleagues, based in Klagenfurt, and Oslo. Such work speaks to the specialist knowledge I have built and sustained through pursuing my own academic work and study. This speaks to my passion for always chasing down the latest, the newest, the 'what's happening next' in my passion, contemporary music endeavour. Classical, electronic, with dance theatre and art: this is precisely my bag: but I am always seeking out newer ideas, how these are expressed in different cultures, through different voices, the female gaze: all of this consumes me.
While raising my young family I worked (from home) as a creative sound designer involved in brand redesigning for multi-nationals, for a variety of products: working with Huddersfield based Mamas & Papas on a range of sound design for toddler and baby play toys, leading to an exclusivity contract. Commercial and contemporary classical aesthetic worlds have bumped along side each other nicely, providing a stimulating work life: creative, never a dull moment.
