Sycorax Georg Friedrich Haas

Sycorax Georg Friedrich Haas

Opera Magazine — Both the beginning and the ending of Sycorax emerged from darkness, the sonic purity, shaping and reshaping of strings propelling the audience into the opera’s deeply crafted and expertly conceptualized workings. Embedded at the outer edges of the Vidmarhallen [Bern] performance space, male and female voices, cloaked in darkness opposite one another, emerged as a primordial, other- worldly force. Voices combined with strings, elegantly coaxed and shaped by the Dutch conductor Bas Wiegers: we are held fast within this soundworld until our release, 80 minutes later. Haas' new work is stark and stunning.

True spectacle as Robert Carsen's Carmen is revived at DNO

Bachtrack — Walking into the auditorium for Dutch National Opera's revival of Robert Carsen's 2009 production of there was much bustling as people claimed their seats. Glancing towards the stage gave the appearance of 'theatre in the round' with a wall of red plastic seating where other audience members seemed to be taking their seats.

Nagano conducts Dutch premiere of Abrahamsen's The Snow Queen

Bachtrack — Appearing for the first time in a concert version, the Dutch premiere of Hans Abrahamsen's The Snow Queen conducted by Kent Nagano concluded NTR Zaterdagmatinee's season with a flourish. Taking Hans Christian Anderson's fairy tale, Abrahamsen shaped the text in collaboration with librettist Henrik Engelbrecht.

A portrait of Hans Abrahamsen at the Concertgebouw

Bachtrack — Embarking on a creative life is not to be undertaken lightly, composing music being described to me once as a potentially dangerous activity. Stories and myths abound as to how that absurdly elusive, unquantifiable matter "inspiration" falls from on high, as notes finally onto a page.

Lush, exotic, precision-orchestrated: premiere of Richard Rijnvos' Amérique du Sud

Lush, exotic, precision-orchestrated: premiere of Richard Rijnvos' Amérique du Sud

Bachtrack — At the top of the programme, with the floor wide open, the exquisite delicacy of Rijnvos’ opening foray into his South American voyage breathed distinct life into his musical vehicle, the orchestra. Precision-orchestrated transcriptions of Brazilian, Amazonian rainforest creatures, derived from intricate computer analyses, the sonic form evoked hovering tightly above, oscillating skittishly from left to right. So scrupulously were the sounds formed and shaped photo: John Snijders Teatro Amazonas, Manaus, Brazil 2008

Rehnqvist's stunning Silent Earth premieres at the Concertgebouw

Bachtrack — With guidelines easing only a few days earlier, Saturday's NTR Zaterdag Matinee in Amsterdam's Concertgebouw was, for a number of reasons, very special. With stringent restrictions on choirs in the Netherlands throughout this recent period, those of us able to be present as part of the reduced audience were greeted with two works including chorus, Karin Rehnqvist's Silent Earth, completed in 2020, and Karol Szymanowski's Stabat Mater.

Cassandra Miller and Joanna Baillie: works in congruity

Bachtrack — Joanna Baillie (b.1973) and Cassandra Miller (b.1976) sketched sounds ranging from field recordings of urban Berlin, where Baillie lives, to birdsong of North American thrushes, hailing from Miller's birthplace in Canada, in a concert presented by the Dutch Ives Ensemble now celebrating their 35th season.

Danish String Quartet presents sublime Schubert and Sørensen pairing

Bachtrack — In Amsterdam's Muziekgebouw, the Danish String Quartet began its four-year Doppelgänger project, exploring Schubert's string quintet and the last three quartets, each to be paired with a signal commission. The grouping of composers within this extended conversation underlines the seriousness of intent.

From Borneo to Holland: World Opera Lab's Ine Aya'

From Borneo to Holland: World Opera Lab's Ine Aya'

Bachtrack — The exquisite Ine Aya', presented in the opening week of the 2021 edition of the Holland Festival, is a work which defies easy categorisation. With genesis in two classic works, the Kayan epic Takna' Lawe', from Kalimantan (West Borneo) and Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, Ine Aya' weaves these together authoring a narrative about the urgency for humankind's guardianship of nature and earth's finite resources.
