Chicago mayor taps Rush Health executive as city's new top public health leader

Chicago's Department of Public Health could soon have a new leader, less than two months after Mayor Brandon Johnson asked the previous commissioner to resign. Johnson is tapping Dr. Garth Walker, a Rush Health executive, to lead the department. The move does require approval from the Chicago City Council. “I’ve spent my career committed to centering a public health approach that addresses the social and economic conditions that shape people’s health and wellbeing,” Walker said in a news release.

Illinois' new AI safety law is the strongest in the nation, advocate says

As concerns rise about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence, Illinois has passed what an executive of one AI advocacy group called “the strongest AI safety law in the country.” Gov. JB Pritzker on Monday signed the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act, which includes provisions similar to laws passed in California and New York. The law, which takes effect on Jan. 1, 2027, implements a framework for large AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which supported the bill.
