Reporters and passersby have photographed and videotaped agents all week. Some do appear uneasy. One was photographed holding his hand near his forehead, shielding his face. Another was filmed saying, “Stop following us, please. Stop following us. Stop following us. Stop following us. Stop following us. Please. Please.” Some travellers have stopped to thank the agents. Others have heckled them. At J.F.K., by midmorning, the security lines weren’t so bad.

This past fall, a U.S. citizen named Marimar Martinez stumbled into a truck stop on the South Side of Chicago after being shot five times by a federal immigration officer. The workers at the truck stop rushed to her aid before she eventually passed out. About a mile away, the agent who shot her was standing on the side of the road with a group of other agents. “I’m good, bro,” he told one of them.

Like other young women she knew who lived on the South Side of Chicago, Marimar Martinez carried a handgun at the bottom of her purse. The gun, a Smith & Wesson pistol for which she had a concealed-carry license, was usually strapped into a neon-pink harness. “It’s a girl gun,” she told me recently. Martinez is thirty-one and works as a teaching assistant at a Montessori school. She thought of herself as a trusting person who’d help “literally anybody,” even strangers.
