From hut to hut: Hiking the Swiss Alps with my teenage daughter
Words by Rudolf Abraham When my teenage daughter asked: “Dad, can we go on a proper hiking trip this summer?” – and by proper, she meant the Alps, which we hadn’t visited together for a few years – I figured it should be a hike she’d remember. After all, I’m lucky beyond words that she still wants to travel with me at 15. How many more dad-daughter hiking trips might there be before it was no longer cool?

Europe’s unsung mountain trails, and how to hike them
Europe has enough in the way of spectacular mountain scenery – and sublimely beautiful mountain trails – to keep you busy for more than half a lifetime. But while some of these trails are justifiably well known – think the Tour du Mont Blanc, the Walker’s Haute Route, Corsica’s GR20 – there are many that, despite being equally beautiful and rewarding, see far fewer hikers.
Everything you should know about Plitvice Lakes National Park Original
This article was produced by National Geographic Traveller (UK). Plitvice Lakes National Park is an exquisitely beautiful series of 16 lakes and myriad waterfalls, hemmed in by cliffs and surrounded by a vast area of forest, in Croatia’s Lika region. Together they form an ever-shifting watery landscape, turquoise and festooned with lush green mosses. What makes these lakes particularly special is that they’re separated by tufa barriers.

Sono migliaia e migliaia i chilometri di sentieri escursionistici che oltre alle montagna eplorano uno spettro completo di paesaggi.

Slovenia with soul: food and culture from the city to the hills
Gastronomy, culture, towns and countryside – there’s plenty to see and do in Slovenia. Photograph: Ciril Jazbec ; Andrej Tarfila It is said that soul is the true spice of any dish – and Slovenian cuisine has soul writ large. This is, in part, down to the vast array of locally produced and sourced ingredients, from trout caught in the crystal, alpine waters of the Soča River, to goat’s cheese, farmed on the misty Polhov Gradec hills.

All of which makes Malaysia a spectacular destination for wildlife watching.
A first-time guide to Montenegro
Montenegro packs so much into a small area, it still surprises me it’s not on more people’s radars. Its gorgeous Adriatic coastline has secluded, rocky coves and great swathes of sandy beaches, beautifully preserved medieval towns and one of the most dramatic natural inlets anywhere on the Mediterranean.

Merry and bright: Christmas markets to enjoy in Europe
There’s nothing quite like Europe’s traditional Christmas markets. Christmas lights decorate snow-dusted streets and squares, stalls are clustered together selling food, drinks and gifts, ice-skating rinks make their much anticipated annual appearance, and the air is filled with the scent of mulled wine and grilled sausages, roasted chestnuts and festive cakes. Christmas markets are part of a tradition stretching back more than 700 years in countries that once formed part of the Holy Roman Empire.
