Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Of course! I own one.
How is social media changing news?
Nothing is done in a corner anymore. I think it has given the world a collective, crowdsourced eye to gaze upon the day's events.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It is being a professional citizen. Asking, searching, showing, investigating and highlighting all things in a community.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter. It's brief, fast and effective.
Who do you wish followed you?
Journalist Charlie LeDuff. I wish I could write a fraction as good as he does.
Why did you become a journalist?
I get paid to do what I love and I can feel good about it too!
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I tried to start one at my school but the administration shut us down before our first issue. Now I get paid to do it.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My recent coverage of a violent murder case. I profiled the fiancée of the victim to show our readers the true impact the brutal crime had.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
You are a human being first, a reporter second. Don't ever forget that you are writing about real people and real events. So do no harm.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime.
