Obama Presidential Center opens, offering an art-filled, hopeful view of US history

The centrepiece of the Obama Presidential Center (OPC), located in the Hyde Park neighbourhood eight miles south of Chicago’s downtown, is a towering, granite-clad museum designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. The $850m complex opens to the public today, on Juneteenth, a strategic and symbolic decision as 19 June is now a US federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

Iván Argote brings roving public art project to Chicago streets

The Paris-based artist and film-maker Iván Argote’s new mobile sculpture, DIGNIDAD, launches in Chicago on 12 June. The artist is perhaps best known for Dinosaur (2024), an enormous, hyper-realistic pigeon sculpture he created for the High Line in New York. Argote was born and raised in Bogotá. He studied art at the National University of Colombia, followed by Beaux-Arts de Paris. Years after earning his Master of Fine Arts degree, he remains in the French capital and now calls it home.

‘The subject demanded a more restrained approach’: Carlos Rolón on revisiting the 1966 uprising in Chicago's Humboldt Park

In his new exhibition at 65Grand, The Division Street Riots, the Chicago multimedia artist Carlos Rolón is showing works referencing the 1966 uprising in the Humboldt Park neighbourhood that occurred the day after the city’s first-ever Puerto Rican Day Parade. The catalyst for the unrest was the police shooting of 20-year-old Arcelis Cruz and the fighting lasted three days. Rolón was born in Chicago in 1970 to Puerto Rican parents and grew up visiting his parents’ native island.
