After 10 years of writing hockey, Ryan decided it was as good a time as any to actually join The Hockey Writers for the 2014-15 season. Having appeared as a guest on such programs as CBC Radio One's Daybreak, Ryan has written for such publications as the Montreal Gazette and Bleacher Report and worked for the NHL itself and his hometown Montreal Canadiens. He currently covers the Habs for THW as a columnist.

The disappointment on the part of any Montreal Canadiens fans after the Habs picked Gleb Pugachyov at 26th overall at the 2026 NHL Entry Draft is both palpable and understandable. And it has nothing to do with Pugachyov, in whom many scouts see upside reminiscent of Tom Wilson, who has emerged as a valuable, physically imposing (but also admittedly reckless) top-six fixture for the Washington Capitals.

The seven-time all-star ended his career with a 2.51 goals-against average (GAA) and .917 save percentage (SV%). His 49 shutouts meanwhile trail only George Hainsworth (75) and Jacques Plante (58) in franchise history. He added 92 playoff appearances to that, going 43-45 with a 2.39 GAA and .919 SV%, while reaching two Eastern Conference Finals (2010, 2014) and the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, where the Canadiens fell 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Both Brendan Gallagher and Sam Montembeault are coming off bad seasons for the Montreal Canadiens, but neither will appear on this list of the likeliest Habs to rebound in 2026-27. The reason is simple, in that both top a separate list of the likeliest players not to return. Even if they did, which is an undeniable possibility, Gallagher is 34, and, despite seeing a relatively impressive uptick in production in 2024-25, his numbers have been generally trending lower for a half-decade.
