After 10 years of writing hockey, Ryan decided it was as good a time as any to actually join The Hockey Writers for the 2014-15 season. Having appeared as a guest on such programs as CBC Radio One's Daybreak, Ryan has written for such publications as the Montreal Gazette and Bleacher Report and worked for the NHL itself and his hometown Montreal Canadiens. He currently covers the Habs for THW as a columnist.

There is absolutely no question: Last season was an incredible success for the Montreal Canadiens as they accumulated accolades aplenty as well as earned widespread respect across the league and among analysts for going as far as they did, with many having gone on record that they would have a hard time just making the playoffs heading into 2025-26. The Canadiens responded by finishing sixth overall, before beating the fifth and fourth-ranked teams in the postseason.

For the second consecutive year, a Montreal Canadiens rookie for all intents and purposes met or exceeded the lofty expectations laid at their feet. In 2024-25, defenseman Lane Hutson won the Calder Memorial Trophy, while Ivan Demidov just fell short in 2025-26, nevertheless leading all rookies in scoring with 62 points.

Most Underrated Montreal Canadiens for 2026-27

As a whole, the Montreal Canadiens are pretty underrated, which probably serves them just fine. The better to take opponents by surprise in 2026-27. Granted, they admittedly did just get outclassed in a five-game third-round defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes this spring. However, a few things should be brought to the attention of anyone who ignorantly chooses to claim the Canadiens didn’t deserve to be there: It was again Round 3, leaving the Canadiens one of four teams left standing.
