Hidden Markov models reveal ontogenetic plasticity in green and loggerhead sea turtles
Abstract Conservation of long-lived marine species depends on understanding how individuals use habitats as they grow. Yet management often relies on size- or place-based stage classifications that overlook behavioral plasticity. We apply a behavior-first, data-driven approach to 47 years of capture–recapture for green (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead (Caretta caretta) turtles in southeast Florida.
Get Biofuel: The Heartbeat of America
In 1948, under the southern sun and the roar of moonshine-inspired machines, NASCAR was born. The early days were raw drivers raced in stock cars that really were “stock,” straight from the showroom floor, often tweaked in the same garages where whiskey stills once bubbled. Back then, engines were simple flathead V8s, more muscle than science, powered by grit and a need for speed. The gas was the same you got for your pickup at the pump and octane was a term rarely used.
Come, Holy Spirit
Tim Keller in his primer on preaching (simply called Preaching) says that the difference between a poor sermon and a good sermon is on us. All poor sermons are the preacher’s fault. But, he says, the difference between a good sermon and a great sermon is on the Holy Spirit. Only the Spirit can take our careful exegesis, skillful apologetic, poetic turns, heartfelt pleas, gentle humor, and make Christ real to the hearts and minds of our listeners.
Get Biofuel: From Farm to Capitol
“If you aren’t at the table, you’ll be on the menu.” This phrase, heard throughout the halls of Congress from legislators and lobbyists alike, describes the sometimes harsh reality of the political sphere and showcases the importance of being involved in our country’s legislative action. Few know this better than Lester Voegeli.
Get Biofuel: If You Built It, They Will Come
Most people, not only baseball fans, know of the movie, "Field of Dreams" — a magical movie from the 1980s set in the beautiful landscape of the plush green corn fields of eastern Iowa. Most of the movie was filmed on the Lansing Family farm outside of Dyersville, IA. High-yielding corn is still growing there, and the house still stands in the same place it did 100 years ago.
Review: ‘What It Means to Be Protestant’ by Gavin Ortlund
The year I turned 30, after a lifetime as a secular Jew, I experienced a crisis that led me to investigate in earnest the existence of God. As any card-carrying academic would do, I read a lot of books. I read such Christian apologetics as C. S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity (which was intriguing), Tim Keller’s The Reason for God (more powerful), and N. T. Wright’s majestic The Resurrection of the Son of God (most powerful of all).
Benefits of Being a Good Neighbor
In his book The Rise of Christianity, Rodney Stark points to the clear contrast between Christian selflessness and pagan self-interest during the Plague of Cyprian in the third century. Whereas pagans retreated to their country villas to escape the plague, Christians stayed behind in the cities to provide medical care, community support, and God-centered conversation for sufferers. Pagans ran away from their neighbors. Christians moved near.
As a Single Man, I Felt Little Pressure to Get Married. I Wish I Had.
I lived a satisfying life in my 20s as a single guy. I earned two college degrees, did internships in Hollywood and in the U.K., traveled abroad, settled into my first job, published my first book, helped plant a church, and developed deep spiritual friendships with a solid group. I’m grateful for all of it. But my life became so much richer when I became a husband. And it was further enriched when I became a father.
Where the Political Parties Stand on Social Issues in 2024
This week, the Democratic Party will formally adopt their platform at the Democratic National Convention. Last month, delegates for the Republican Party did the same at their convention. The platform is a document that outlines the statement of principles and policies the party has decided to support. Why should Christians care about a document that few non-politicians will ever read? Because of the influence the two major party platforms have on public policy.
5 Times Waiting Is Hard (and Why)
Sometimes we don’t get waiting right because we’re not prepared for how hard it is. Underneath our disdain for waiting is often our longing for control. Let me be clear: that desire isn’t fundamentally sinful. Nor is it necessarily wrong if waiting is hard. Gaps in life are part of God’s design for the world. They’re a common element of our human experience for good reason. Imagine what you’d be like if you didn’t have to wait for anything.
The Wedding We’re Waiting For
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” (Rev. 21:1–2) If to be exiled is to be separated, displaced from, or cut off from the place or people we most love, then the end of exile must mean, among other things, reunion: the coming back together of what has been kept apart through exile.
4 Ways Faith and Film Interact
I grew up loving movies and loving Jesus. But my filmgoing and churchgoing felt like separate worlds with little overlap. That changed one afternoon when I was a high school sophomore. I was in a movie theater in Shawnee, Kansas, and the movie was Terrence Malick’s WWII epic The Thin Red Line. It was the first time I watched a “secular” film that spoke to me directly as a Christian, engaged my head theologically, and stirred my heart to love God more.
Can a Man Feel Like He’s a Woman?
Earlier this year, Christian hip-hop artist Shai Linne released a new track titled “Farm Talk.” This modern parable uses farm animals to depict one of the West’s most passionately debated cultural phenomena—the body-mind identity confusion of today’s transgender movement. In the track, a hog claims to be a dog, a hen claims to be a rooster, and a horse supports their self-discoveries while a frog lovingly contends for the truth of their biological identities.
Connecting empathy with reason and truth
Less than a week after its opening ceremony, the Paris Olympics generated yet another culturally significant incident. Algerian boxer Imane Khelif’s victory over Italy’s Angela Carini has confused many, outraged some, and shockingly but not surprisingly, resulted in silence in others. The 46-second-long bout ended when Carini stopped the fight, throwing in the towel.
Darby, Dispensationalism, and the Rise of Evangelical Antisemitism
Few theologians are as loved or loathed as John Nelson Darby (1800–1882), and few theologians’ reputations depend so little on what they actually believed. Historians, public commentators, social media users, and even country musicians like John Rich agree that, for good or ill, Darby should be regarded as the father of dispensational premillennialism, the most important vector through which Zionism has influenced the religious cultures and foreign policy of the United States.
Pastors Can Lead Well by Preaching Well
Pastoral leadership from the pulpit is critical. Most often, we find books on leadership and books on preaching, but rarely do we find volumes that argue for the interconnectedness of the two. Currie, Pace, and Shaddix make the connection admirably. Pace and Shaddix address this interconnectedness more succinctly and practically, while Currie’s work is more robust in theological argumentation, with fewer specific applications.
‘The Pastor as Leader,’ ‘Expositional Leadership’
Pastors feel intense pressure to successfully lead the organization known as the local church, and it’s burning them out. Over the past few decades, a business leadership model has shaped the expectations for many pastors. People expect them to be shepherds but also to lead the church with vision and strategy. This isn’t fair, and it often pulls pastors in the wrong direction.
Get Biofuel: What’s in a Brand?
Evolution is a necessary part of almost every aspect of life. Companies are not immune to this growth. Growth Energy’s brand is its calling card, signaling our identity to the world. And like a NASCAR racecar, we must fine-tune our brand to stay in the spotlight. Companies throughout history have rebranded to stay relevant to their evolving market. Tupperware, Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, and Apple have all adopted new brand identities to stay in touch with their ever-changing consumer.
Get Biofuel: Richard Childress: Legend in NASCAR and in Life
“You reap what you sow” is a familiar phrase that reminds us if you plant good seeds or do something good for your fellow man, you should expect to reap rewards later. It’s a proverb that declares future consequences are inevitably shaped by present actions. Richard Childress is a well-known figure in the world of NASCAR and the biofuel industry. He indeed has a proverbial story that has inspired many.
Generative AI trends: What to Expect in 2024
According to a recent McKinsey study, the impact of generative AI (GenAI) impact on productivity could add trillions of dollars in value to the global economy which they estimate will add the equivalent of $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion annually across the 63 use cases analyzed. About 75% of the value that GenAI’s use cases could deliver falls across four areas: customer operations, marketing and sales, software engineering, and R&D.
The Pitfalls of Building Your Own Generative AI Solution - GovLoop
With all of the hype and abundance of options for generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) solutions, the allure of building your own solution can be irresistible, especially for technically proficient government agency teams. With the availability of various and inexpensive elements such as vector databases, deployment frameworks, and large language models (LLMs) from multiple sources, the process may seem straightforward at first glance. However, in reality, it is much more involved.
How to Deploy Generative AI Effectively in 2024
Enterprises that educate themselves about the benefits and limitations of generative AI and LLMs -- and conduct effective POCs – will reap the benefits of this technology. The dramatic introduction to the general public of generative AI and large language models (LLMs) presents business leaders with an inflection point they must embrace now -- but with care. On the one hand, everyone today has access to the most groundbreaking technological advancement since the internet.
How Generative AI Stands to Supercharge Customer Service and Support in 2024
Ryan Welsh, Founder and CEO of Kyndi, recently compiled a list of trends that he believes will help customer service professionals practically deploy GenAI and make it effective for users. Almost every organization is evaluating generative AI (GenAI) solutions and trying to figure out how to leverage the technology to drive business value today, rather than waiting for the future.
Groundhog Day Christmas
Does it seem like Christmas is starting earlier and earlier each year? It feels like the day after Halloween the Christmas commercials begin. I try to hold Christmas at bay in my mind until after Thanksgiving. But last week I had a meeting with the creative team at our church to start talking about Easter. Sometimes it feels like the weeks and the seasons all start to blur together. If there hadn't already been four inches of snow in Detroit, I wouldn't even know it's winter.
Six Considerations for Evaluating GenAI Solutions for Fast Deployment Today - GovLoop
While Generative AI (GenAI) holds significant promise in aiding tasks like content generation and customer service, widespread government agency adoption is hindered by various challenges, including hallucinations, a lack of source attribution, and concerns about data security. Vendors offer a bewildering array of GenAI solutions, all of which seem very similar.
More Than a Baby
Introduction We find in Luke 1 the well-known story of the prophecy of the birth of Jesus that comes to Mary. Most of you could give me the details of the story right now, and you don't need me to even read it. But we're going to do it anyway, because like every famous or very popular passage in Scripture we miss things all the time. But before we go to Luke 1, let's read why we need Luke 1.
Nurturing the Future: Essential Skill Sets for Government Employees in the Age of Generative AI - GovLoop
With all the excitement and hype regarding generative AI (GenAI), government agencies are increasingly considering the technology to enhance their operations, streamline processes, and improve public service delivery. In addition to the well-known challenges of GenAI with respect to hallucinations, security, domain-specific language, explainability, and cost, agencies are wondering what skill sets they need to hire or develop to be successful with this emerging technology.
Demystifying Generative AI Myths: Why It All Comes Down to What You Feed It - GovLoop
Every vendor that engages with government agencies is likely touting some type of generative AI (GenAI) or Large Language Model (LLM) solution in an effort to capitalize on the considerable attention generated by these technologies over the last 11 months. These AI systems claim to support a number of key capabilities such as natural language generation, translation, and text summarization.
How Government Agencies Can Accelerate New Employee Onboarding and Productivity - GovLoop
According to a 2022 BusinessInsider article, the attrition rate for federal government employees under the age of 30 was 8.5% — double the average level of their older counterparts aged 30 to 59. Government agencies continually cope with employee turnover and retirements. As a result, government agencies are constantly working to hire and onboard new employees.
Human Curated Knowledge Cannot Be Replaced With Automation - GovLoop
In many government agencies, automation and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping traditional roles, including those of knowledge management professionals. Contrary to concerns about obsolescence, many of these professionals are now being tasked with the pivotal role of orchestrating the automation of knowledge with AI within their organizations.
How Government Agencies Can Provide the Information Constituents Really Want Without the Guesswork - GovLoop
Government agencies are facing the challenge of providing citizens with the information they need in a clear, concise, and easily accessible manner. Today’s constituents want the opportunity to self-serve, and while you already might have developed the critical content and knowledge they need, constituents still spend too much time navigating your site, unable to find the answers they seek. That ultimately makes it necessary for them to call your support line. Why? Two reasons: 1.
Selling a Generative AI Project Internally to Government Leaders: A Strategic Approach - GovLoop
Government agencies are under increasing pressure to adopt innovative solutions that enhance their services while operating within tight human resource and funding constraints. While generative AI (GenAI) presents a unique opportunity to streamline operations and improve citizen engagement, it’s not a mature technology.
Generative AI Alone Can't Solve Your Customer Support Issues
Customer service leaders have long wished for a true virtual assistant to help customers and partners get accurate answers without calling the helpdesk, but is this nirvana actually attainable? With the advent of generative artificial intelligence models like ChatGPT, there is hope that these technologies can finally handle customer inquiries and complaints.
Clearing the Air in the Windy City
The rolling thunder of racecars was drowned out only by the deafening roar of NASCAR fans and a deluge of July rain pouring from the sky in downtown Chicago. The rain, although not welcome by the sellout crowd, helped to clear the air from the Canadian wildfire smoke that had hovered over the city for days.
Why Government Agencies Should Leverage Generative AI Now to Optimize Customer Support…It’s All in the Tools - GovLoop
Customer service leaders across federal, state, and local government agencies want to provide each citizen with the absolute best experience possible to citizens, similar to the experience that elected officials have with their staff who research questions on their behalf and simply provide them the answers. The emergence of generative AI models like ChatGPT have sparked hope that these large language models can finally address customer inquiries and complaints efficiently.
Why Government Websites Should Be as Intuitive as Visiting a Retail Store - GovLoop
Imagine this scenario: You walk into a brick-and-mortar retail store, and when you ask the store assistant a question, instead of a verbal response, they point at a display with a list of options or rush over to a whiteboard to sketch an illustration that includes minimal text. In this silent exchange, the richness of verbal communication is replaced by a menu of options or a group of visuals. Odd, right? Yet, this has been the paradigm for most government websites for the past 25 years.
Enslaved and Enslaver
On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans that the Civil War had ended. And with the end of the war came the beginning of their freedom. Was it good? Yes. American chattel slavery had existed since 1619 and persisted in the country until the end of the Civil War in 1865. And while General Granger’s announcement was good, it really wasn’t news. At least it wasn’t new news. The war had actually ended on April 9, 1895.
From Search Engines to Answer Engines — Bridging the Digital Divide to Optimize Constituent Experience - GovLoop
If you’re like most government agencies, you and your team have spent countless hours trying to make information available to your constituents, only to discover that they still need to call the support center to get answers. How can agencies break this unproductive cycle and remove the resource intensive burden on their already overworked staff? The main reason it is difficult for people to find answers is that 80% of the data that contains the answers is unstructured, free-form text.
Get Biofuel: We Always Come Out Swinging
“Grit has two components: passion and perseverance.” -Angela Duckworth The bioethanol industry knows a lot about grit. From day one, we’ve been fighting to bring clean, affordable, American-made biofuels to consumers across America. Usually, that fight is an uphill battle, but we have seen the fruits of those labors in the past year. In 2023, the Inflation Reduction Act promises to be a bright beacon to bioprocessing and the bioeconomy.
Preaching on Palm Sunday
I read a biography of Winston Churchill, where the author gave nearly equal attention to each part of his life: childhood, struggles as a student, military college, years as a war correspondent, service in World War I, Member of Parliament, the war years, and after he left office. In this author’s telling, no one section of Churchill’s life stood out.
Why Leveraging Unstructured Data and AI Will Be Key to Customer Success in 2023
Analysts like IDC and Deloitte estimate that up to 80% of the world’s data is unstructured text data, which makes getting valuable insights out of this type of data a huge challenge. Worse, customers can’t easily find the right answers to address their product and service-related questions that are hidden in large amounts of support documents.
My Favorite Christmas Theme
My Favorite Christmas Theme Create meaningful and memorable Christmas services. Image: winyuu / Getty Images One of my favorite Christmas programs my church ever produced started with a video of Sir Elton John. Who would have thought that a crazy, sunglasses, and sequin wearing musician would have an impact on how we created church that year? But, he did.
Get Biofuel: Casting a Wider Net
In NASCAR, there is no doubt that winning races defines a team on the racetrack. For NASCAR’s partners, however, success depends on how wide and deep we cast our nets. With almost 70 million fans, NASCAR trails only the NFL in followed sports. And with bioethanol surpassing 20 million miles as the official fuel of the sport this year, we continue to evolve in our net casting.

How Natural-Language Search Can Help Reduce Case Escalation and Increase Customer Satisfaction
Today’s customers have become much more digital-savvy post-pandemic and want to be self-sufficient. Not only do they want to find information about your business on their own through various digital channels, they also want to solve their issues quickly by themselves without having to call customer support.
Speeding in Opposite Directions: ‘Lightyear’ and ‘Maverick’
Editors’ note: TGC reviews media that is not suitable for everyone. To help readers make wise viewing decisions, we recommend reading “Should I Watch This?” and checking out a content guide. There are plenty of similarities between movie characters Buzz Lightyear and Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Both are talented test pilots with a penchant for going rogue and taking risks—even when bosses and protocols order them to play it safer.
I lost both my parents in my 20s. Running is what saved me
June 22, 2022, 12:18 PM UTC By Ryan Welsh The biggest challenge of my life has been losing both my parents under tragic circumstances in my mid-20s. My mental well-being, resilience and ability to adapt were tested like never before, but those challenges also opened new doors for me that I previously never considered exploring. Like running. I’ll start at the beginning, though: I was raised in a middle-class suburb of Princeton, New Jersey, by two supportive parents who were public school teachers.
Ten Angles for Preaching on Christ's Death
Ten Angles for Preaching on Christ's Death Ten ideas to keep your Good Friday sermons fresh and engaging. The Gospels are Passion narratives with a long introduction. Someone somewhere wrote that. One-third of the synoptics and one-half of John are devoted to the last week of Jesus' recorded ministry. Consider how odd that proportion would be if a biography of Theodore Roosevelt or Florence Nightingale were devoted to the final week of their lives.
