What was your first job as a journalist?
My first job came at the age of 14. I was hired as a sports reporter for LaxDirt.com, a site that covered professional lacrosse.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, actually. I occasionally would use my mother's old Underwood electric when I wanted a dose of journalistic nostalgia.
How is social media changing news?
It makes everything more time demanding and creates a more open conversation between journalists, readers, and recently politicians.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Will McAvoy for HBO's Newsroom. The way he fought for journalistic integrity and journalism as honorable profession is quite noble.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To be a person of high ethics and integrity who is trusted to hold those in power accountable for the benefit of a nations citizens.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Many tools. These can include Adobe editing software, Zoom H4N recorder, steno pad, smart phone, etc. When with a PJ, a DSLR camera.
What's your favorite social network?
I'd have to say Twitter. It allows you to build a audience and network with people around the world in a more open sense than say, Facebook.
Who do you wish followed you?
Wolf Blitzer. He's been a big inspiration for me, as he is not only a great journalist, but also graduated from my high school.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because journalism is an important part of American democracy, and I feel it is the best way in which I can contribute to my fellow citizens.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did, yes. I served as co-editor during my sophomore year, before going on to found my own community newspaper during my senior year.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My time covering the Ken-Ton School Board. I was threatened and harassed by those in power, but community loved it, which is all that matters
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
As a journalist who hasn't quite "made it" yet, I will tell them do not wait until college. Get involved in journalism at any level ASAP.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
A series of foreign film reviews for a newspaper in a suburban rust-belt community.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Reading a book. More than likely a memoir from a famous journalist, politician, or other influential persons.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I've always had a soft-spot for the Washington Post.
