A wildfire in the southern Spanish province of Almería has killed at least 12 people overnight, making it one of the country’s deadliest on record as temperatures soar. Some of the victims were found dead inside a vehicle that had been overtaken by the flames, according to local authorities. Many of them are believed to be foreigners, including potentially four British nationals, Juan Manuel Moreno, president of the Andalusia region, said in an interview to the Antena 3 TV channel.

Tourists traveling the Mediterranean by cruise ship are paying less in taxes while polluting more than visitors who stay in hotels. Cruise passengers visiting Spain, Italy and France pay 12% taxes on overnight cabin stays, while hotel guests pay 23%, according to a study published Friday by the European Federation for Transport and Environment, or T&E, an advocacy group. This is mainly due to cruise ships being legally classified as maritime transport, which shields them from VAT and fuel taxes.
