Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

An article published in "The Bold Italic".

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, I learned how to type on one. A home economics teacher put black nail polish over the letters and forced us to learn touch typing.

How is social media changing news?

I lost out on a job with a publication for this answer - it's shaping how people process information. Soundbites, memes, nanoseconds of info

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I have had my trusted Final Draft on my laptop since circa 2002. MS Word has stayed true over the past two decades.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter is where I go to catch up with other writers and learn what I should care about in that moment.

Who do you wish followed you?

Someone with the influence to hire me and get my work published.

Why did you become a journalist?

I write because it's the only thing I'm good at. Sometimes it turns into an article that fits the description of journalism.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was the news editor of my school paper. I wanted to be the features editor, but it wasn't my path.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading a book or binge-watching a television series to review and tweet about.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Atlantic. The Week. Variety. Hollywood Reporter. New York Times.
