Prelude Julia Steiner Musician Julia Steiner is a songwriter and musician based in Chicago. She started the band Ratboys as an acoustic duo in 2010, alongside guitarist Dave Sagan. The band, now including drummer Marcus Nuccio and bassist Sean Neumann, has released six studio albums and toured across the world. Their most recent album, Singin’ to an Empty Chair, released in February 2026 via New West Records, is critically acclaimed and has received resounding support from fans.

Insisting on the truth does not serve the painter. Five hundred horses run down the trail of blood and then five hundred horses run it again. I did this. Took my own photo, painted over my eyes, listened closer. And then I put in my earplugs. I met a million horses. I married very few of them. Despite the power of the mind who can say who marries or how or why or where horses do. Marriage is a friendship for hire. Like most jobs, it’s not the only gig around. I consulted the ancestry.

Cry Perfume - Black Ocean

Lyrical poems that engage with grief and loss and the toll of overdose and addiction with an activist bent. The title of Cry Perfume is an imperative to bottle sorrow in a beautiful vessel and shed the chemicals that cloud your sight. Written over a four-year period on tour and after losing loved ones and peers to overdose, Dupuis funneled complicated grief into harm reduction advocacy, working to fundraise for and distribute overdose prevention resources in venues internationally.
