When Cynthia Akins-Owens learned last April that her landlord of 12 years was hiking her $1,200 monthly rent by $464 on her Tampa, Fla., apartment, she knew she couldn’t afford it. “I was afraid I would have to stay with a relative and lose my independence,” said Akins-Owens, 75. Then the former school bus attendant heard about New Life Village, an intergenerational community in Tampa that offers affordable housing to older adults.

Retirees are filling the news hole where local papers have shut down

When the giant publishing chain Gannett shut down its money-losing weekly print newspaper the Brookline Tab last year, I joined many others around the country living within an area with minimal or no local news coverage. Gannett still has an online version here in Brookline, Massachusetts, but it has pivoted to a regional model and what I read about Brookline is far from substantive. I suppose it's something.
