Massive fish die-off at Baja lake blamed on climate swings

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Tens of thousands of dead fish that washed ashore at a lake in Tijuana in recent weeks have been gathered and buried in a giant hole by city crews. In early January, visitors to the lake began noticing a lot of dead fish and a foul smell. The lake, which sits behind the Rodríguez Dam in Tijuana, is the city’s primary storage for water. Salvador Cervantes, director of Baja California’s Civil Protection, said the dead fish are all the same species.

Tijuana schools to provide free measles vaccines for children

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — Public schools in Tijuana will begin offering children measles vaccinations starting next week. Miguel Alfredo Nuño García, head of the city’s public education, said the vaccines will be provided free of charge as long as parents or guardians give written permission. Thirty-three measles cases were recently detected among children in Tijuana, five of which remain active.

Mexico sending 800 tons of aid to Cuba

SAN DIEGO (Border Report) — The Mexican government is sending more than 800 tons of humanitarian aid to Cuba as a gesture of cooperation and solidarity, according to Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Two ships have been loaded with food items such as crackers, beans, rice, tuna in water, sardines, vegetable oil and and 277 tons of powdered milk. The shipment also comprises personal hygiene items and water. The vessels left over the weekend from the port city of Veracruz.
