Salvatore Babones is a political sociologist at the University of Sydney. His book The New Authoritarianism: Trump, Populism, and the Tyranny of Experts was named 'Best on Politics 2018' by the Wall Street Journal. Salvatore is also the author or co-author of six other books and more than two dozen academic research articles. Did India’s fertility rate just fall below the level required to sustain the population at a constant level? No. That happened in 2017. But don’t tell India’s newspapers, or its worried political commentators. They all get their news from The Economist magazine, and The Economist just ran a story under the incendiary headline “India’s Population Will Soon Be Falling—Probably Quite Fast”. How soon? Around 2050, according to the University of Washington cited by The Economist.

Are universities really making a “net loss” on domestic students?

As accounting tricks go, it’s a howler. According to the New South Wales Audit Office, at NSW universities, “operating costs per student of $37,868 exceeded the average revenue per domestic student of $25,213, representing a 33% deficit margin.” They thought this claim was so important that they included it four times, each time under successive red-letter headings like “domestic student revenue does not cover operating costs.” But wait—is that true?

The Internet has awoken to the milestone that Narendra Modi will be surpassing Jawaharlal Nehru on June 10 to become India’s longest continuously-serving elected prime minister. That’s a lot of qualifiers, but they are deserved. Nehru held office for four-and-a-half years before going to the polls for his first electoral test, while his daughter, Indira Gandhi, had two very different prime ministerships — the first ending in shambles and the second in tragedy.
