Two years ago, Nia Jael was a lawyer with no formal art training. Now, her work has been shown at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, and she’s part of an artist residency at the Hunt Art Gallery. Many artists go years without the opportunity to showcase their work, but Jael credits her early momentum to her law career. “I’d always known I was going to be a lawyer,” she says. “I kind of co-opted my mother’s dream.
