Mookie Betts Credits Giving Homeless Man Pizza For His Two Home Runs (Video) by Sam Galanis on Thu, Oct 1, 2015 at 12:00AM Being a good person pays off. Outfielder Mookie Betts was instrumental in the Boston Red Sox’s 9-5 win over the New York Yankees on Wednesday, hitting a game-tying solo home run in the seventh inning and a two-run shot in the 11th. And he had a rather interesting theory as to how he did it. The secret behind Mookie Betts' two-homer game? Giving a homeless guy a pizza.
Watch Dustin Pedroia Crush A Grand Slam To Put Red Sox Ahead Of Rays
If Dustin Pedroia heard all the chatter about how the Boston Red Sox perform with the bases loaded, then it certainly didn't faze him Saturday night. The Red Sox had the bases juiced with two outs when Pedroia came up to bat in the seventh inning against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Chicago Cubs Already Selling Playoff Tickets To Season Ticket Holders
The Chicago Cubs apparently really like their playoff chances. The team notified season ticket holders Thursday that they already have a chance to purchase postseason tickets. They have until Sept. 8 to purchase them, and they include an Oct. 7 wild-card game, the National League Division Series, the NL Championship Series and even the World Series. While teams often sell tickets before clinching a playoff spot, it seems premature at this point, especially because the Cubs aren’t a lock to make it.
Patriots Are U.K. Favorite; Tom Brady Tops In European NFL Jersey Sales
The New England Patriots are a pretty big deal in Europe. Per Yahoo! Sports, the latest NFL jersey sales for the continent featured three Patriots in the top seven: quarterback Tom Brady at No. 1, tight end Rob Gronkowski at No. 5 and wide receiver Julian Edelman at No. 7. And apparently, they have quite the following in the United Kingdom.
Julian Edelman Promises ‘There’s About To Be Another’ ACL Comeback Story
Julian Edelman is itching to get back on the field. The New England Patriots’ No. 1 wide receiver was ruled out for the season before it even began when he tore his ACL in the team’s third preseason game. And Edelman told a crowd Tuesday at BJ’s Wholesale Club’s headquarters in Westborough, Mass, where he was promoting his memoir, “Relentless,” that he’s already progressing. “Knee feels good,” Edelman said, via NBC Sports Boston. “I’m on my way back.
Markelle Fultz’s Strange Injury Situation Makes Sixers Look Inept
The Philadelphia 76ers are dealing with an injury to their top draft pick for the third time in four seasons, and yet again, the details behind it are murky. Markelle Fultz, whom the Sixers selected No. 1 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, is dealing with a shoulder injury that will keep him out of Philly’s next three games. But how and when he suffered the injury, how severe it is and what the Sixers are doing about it all are unclear.
Lady Gaga, Joe Torre Make Odd Pair At World Series Game 1 In Los Angeles
The World Series hasn’t been in Los Angeles since 1988, so it’s no surprise that plenty of Hollywood celebrities are turning up for the occasion as the Dodgers face the Houston Astros. One of those celebrities was Lady Gaga, who attended Game 1 at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday with a friend. But the singer also had a rather unexpected seatmate, with whom she posed for a photo and posted it to Twitter. Who knew Gaga was such a big Joe Torre fan?
David Ortiz’s 2013 Beard Shavings Are Up For Auction - Again?
Someone apparently wasn’t satisfied with their orb full of David Ortiz’s beard clippings, so they’re looking for a new home. The former Boston Red Sox designated hitter and former outfielder Shane Victorino shaved their iconic beards after the team won the 2013 World Series and auctioned them off to benefit Movember, which raises awareness for testicular and prostate cancer. But if you missed out, you have another chance because Big Papi’s beard is back on the block.
Gordon Hayward’s Daughters Help Celtic Recover By Being Adorable
Gordon Hayward has a long way to go before he recovers from a devastating leg injury, but he has plenty of help at home. The Boston forward dislocated his ankle and fractured his tibia just six minutes into his Celtics debut on NBA Opening Night and is expected to be out for the rest of the season. But luckily, Hayward has two little doctors at home to cheer him up: his daughters Bernie and Charlie. Hayward’s wife, Robyn, posted pictures of the two girls on Instagram, and they’re pretty adorable.
Patriots’ Addition Of Cornerback Johnson Bademosi Was Long Time Coming
Johnson Bademosi would have been in New England before this season if it was up to Bill Belichick and the Patriots. The defensive back mostly has played on special teams throughout his six-year career and the beginning of this season, but Bademosi has played 128 defensive snaps at cornerback over the Patriots’ last two games with starting cornerback Stephon Gilmore still in the concussion protocol.
MLB Odds: Dodgers Pegged As World Series Favorites Over Astros Ahead Of Game 1
The Los Angeles Dodgers will return to the World Series for the first time since 1988 when they take the field Tuesday for Game 1 of this year’s Fall Classic against the Houston Astros as -166 favorites on the MLB odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Georgia Man Arrested, (Sort Of) Tells Police He’s Hakeem Olajuwon
Hakeem Olajuwon did not get arrested in Nashville for promoting prostitution despite what one Georgia man wanted police to believe. Tyree Marlon Hines was arrested in Tennessee’s capital recently when undercover detectives responded to an ad on a prostitution website, according to an arrest affidavit acquired by WZTV in Nashville.
JuJu Smith-Schuster Walks To Steelers Practice After Bike Gets Stolen
The Pittsburgh Steelers rookie wide receiver scored a touchdown Sunday in the team’s 29-14 over the Cincinnati Bengals, so he should’ve had a nice, relaxing night. Instead, Smith-Schuster got roped into the Martavis Bryant drama when the disgruntled Steelers wideout said in an Instagram comment that “JuJu is no where near better than me.” Then, on Tuesday, the poor guy’s bike got stolen and he had to walk to practice. Smith-Schuster was pretty torn up about it, too.
Hanley Ramirez Sends His Best To Gordon Hayward As Both Recover From Surgery
They don’t get to interact with each other all that often, but Boston athletes still stick together. Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward has received well-wishes from people all over the sports world, including New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and tight end Rob Gronkowski, since going down with a gruesome ankle/leg injury in the first six minutes of the Celtics’ season.
MLB Rumors: Red Sox Expected To Name Alex Cora Manager Despite Interest From Nats
It appears the Washington Nationals’ alleged interest in Alex Cora will go for naught. The Boston Red Sox have been connected to the Houston Astros bench coach and former infielder, and NBC Sports Boston’s Evan Drellich reported Thursday that the Sox were just waiting for the Astros’ American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees to conclude before extending a formal offer for their manager job.
NFL Odds: Cowboys Road Favorites Against Winless 49ers In Week 7
The Dallas Cowboys expect to have running back Ezekiel Elliott in the lineup when they take the field against the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s Week 7 clash as six-point road favorites on the NFL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Elliott had been facing a six-game suspension that was set to start with Sunday afternoon’s Cowboys vs.
Astros To Start Charlie Morton Vs. Yankees, CC Sabathia In ALCS Game 7
The Houston Astros and New York Yankees have one last shot at the World Series, and the pitching matchup will be a repeat of Game 3. The Astros forced a Game 7 in their American League Championship Series on Friday with a 7-1 win at Minute Maid Park, and they’ll send Charlie Morton to the mound to counter Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia on Saturday night in Houston. The Yankees beat the ‘Stros 8-1 in the two pitchers’ previous matchup this ALCS, but that game was played at Yankee Stadium.
Barcelona Offers Lionel Messi Lifetime Contract To Retire With Team
It sounds like Lionel Messi isn’t leaving Barcelona any time soon. The Argentinian soccer superstar’s contract is up this summer, and fans of the club were getting antsy that he hadn’t re-signed yet. But Barcelona CEO Oscar Grau said at a meeting Saturday to approve the team’s budget that Messi would have a new deal, and then some. “Messi renewed his contract for four years, but the club will offer him a contract for life,” Grau said in Spanish, via Mundo Deportivo.
NFL Rumors: Marshawn Lynch Will Appeal One-Game Suspension For Shoving Ref
Marshawn Lynch wouldn’t be suspended next week if it were up to him.
Watch QB Teddy Bridgewater’s Emotional Return To Vikings Practice
The Minnesota Vikings quarterback suffered a horrific knee injury in training camp on Aug. 30, 2016, dislocating his knee and tearing his ACL, and it was believed at the time that it could end his career. But Bridgewater returned to practice for the first time in 14 months Wednesday, and the Vikings captured it all on video. Bridgewater’s teammates cheered and yelled his name when he jogged out to the practice field.
Why Colin Cowherd Believes Tom Brady’s Recent Stretch Is Best In NFL History
The New England Patriots don’t look as sharp in 2017 as they did in their Super Bowl-winning season last year, but that hasn’t affected Tom Brady. Even at 40 years old, the quarterback still is leading the NFL in yards (1,959) and yards per game (326.5) over six weeks and is second in passer rating (106.9) and tied for second in touchdowns (13) and interceptions (two) among everyday starters.
Jeremy Lin’s Reaction To Injuring Knee In Nets-Pacers Is Pretty Heartbreaking
The NBA season just started, but it hasn’t been kind to the players so far. Opening Night kicked off Tuesday with Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward dislocating his ankle and fracturing his tibia in a terrifying scene six minutes into their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. And on Wednesday, Jeremy Lin potentially suffered a similar fate. The Brooklyn Nets point guard attempted a layup with five minutes to go, and Indiana Pacers big men Thaddeus Young and Myles Turner came in to block Lin.
Jared Goff Starts GoFundMe To Raise Money For California Wildfire Victims
Jared Goff lives in Southern California, but his heart still is in the north. Northern California has been dealing with wildfires that have left at least 42 dead and 185 more injured and have caused over $3 billion worth of damage. The Los Angeles Rams quarterback grew up in Novato, Calif., which is located in the North Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Nike, Patriots Release ‘SB51 Comeback’ Sneakers Made From Game-Used Footballs
The New England Patriots certainly aren’t letting the Atlanta Falcons forget the result of Super Bowl LI ahead of their rematch at Gillette Stadium on Sunday. Nike on Thursday released the Air Force 1 Low Superbowl 51 Comeback, a sneaker commemorating the Pats’ 34-28 overtime win. The shoes are made from two footballs used in the actual game and feature the Patriots logo, the Super Bowl LI logo, game details and actual football laces.
Gordon Hayward’s Injury Always Will Be Part Of His Story, Paul George Says
Perhaps no one understands what Gordon Hayward is going through better than Paul George. The Oklahoma City Thunder forward essentially snapped his lower leg in half during a Team USA scrimmage prior to the 2014-15 season, so he came to plenty of people’s minds after Hayward suffered a similarly horrific leg injury six minutes into the Boston Celtics’ season opener Tuesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Chris Long To Donate Remaining 2017 Salary To Charities For Educational Equality
Chris Long won’t be collecting any income during the 2017 season. Instead, the Philadelphia Eagles defensive end pledged his entire salary to charities that work to promote equality in education. Long already donated his first six game checks to scholarships in his hometown of Charlottesville, Va., in the wake of the white supremacist riots that left one counter-protester dead.
Rodney Harrison Admits He Left Super Bowl LI Early, ‘Felt Terrible’
Anyone who watched Super Bowl LI can admit that the New England Patriots looked hopeless for much of the game before their eventual 34-28 win. The Atlanta Falcons were dominating all aspects of the contest as they took a 28-3 lead in the third quarter and finished the period up 28-9. Understandably, some Patriots fans stopped watching the game before they made the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history.
McKayla Maroney Alleges Sexual Abuse At Age 13 By USA Gymnastics Doctor
Former Michigan State and Team USA gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar is facing 22 counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct brought about by over 100 women, and a major Olympian just joined the list of accusers.
LeBron James Wants No Part Of Jaylen Brown Dunk During Celtics-Cavs Game
LeBron James is no stranger to posterizing opponents, so he knows when to avoid getting posterized himself. The Boston Celtics were in Cleveland on Tuesday to take on James and the Cavaliers, and the Celtics’ attempted comeback in their 102-99 loss was marred by the loss of Gordon Hayward, who suffered a gruesome leg injury in the first six minutes of the game.
NHL Odds: Bruins Open Homestand Vs. Canucks Looking To Bounce Back From Loss
The Boston Bruins will be looking to rebound from Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Malcolm Subban and the Vegas Golden Knights when they kick off a four-game homestand with a visit from the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday night. Subban stood tall in his first action with Vegas since being claimed off waivers from the Bruins on Oct. 3, stopping 21 of 22 shots to seal the Bruins’ loss as a -162 favorite on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Jets Fan Sitting On American Flag Apparently Doesn’t Understand Irony
If you follow the NFL — or even if you don’t, honestly — you probably know the national anthem has been a big point of contention this season. Free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick began taking a knee during the national anthem last year as a way to protest racial injustice and police brutality in the United States. As the movement spread through the NFL this season, some viewers thought players were protesting the anthem and the flag themselves rather than inequality.
Isaiah Thomas Clarifies Comments About Giving Danny Ainge Cold Shoulder
Isaiah Thomas doesn’t have a vendetta against Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge. He’d just prefer not to run into him any time soon.
Hanley Ramirez Tweets Photo From Hospital Bed Before Shoulder Surgery
Hanley Ramirez is going under the knife. The Boston Red Sox designated hitter/first baseman dealt with left shoulder issues for much of the 2017 season, and it was apparent in his stats, as Ramirez batted .242 with 23 home runs, 62 RBIs and a .750 OPS. So now that the Red Sox’s season is over after an early postseason exit in the American League Division Series, Ramirez elected to get surgery on the joint and tweeted from his hospital bed Tuesday.
Red Sox Join MLB Teams In Helping Young A’s Fan Replace Memorabilia Lost In Fire
Wildfires have been raging through Northern California, leaving at least 41 people dead, displacing residents and causing billions of dollars worth of damage. But where there’s tragedy, there are helpers, and Major League Baseball teams are doing their part to help one family in Santa Rosa, Calif., after their house burned down.

Derrick Henry, Titans Cover Spread Trying To Run Off Clock Vs. Colts
Bettors’ dreams were dashed in the final seconds of “Monday Night Football” for the second time in three weeks. You might remember in Week 4 when the Kansas City Chiefs ruined plenty of people’s nights by covering the 7 1/2-point spread and surpassing the over when linebacker Justin Houston scored on a fumble recovery with no time remaining on the Washington Redskins’ final play of the night en route to a 29-20 win.
NFL Odds: Cardinals Home Underdogs In Week 6 For Adrian Peterson’s Arizona Debut
Former NFL MVP Adrian Peterson is expected to be in the Arizona lineup when the Cardinals welcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to town Sunday as narrow two-point home underdogs on the NFL Week 6 odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Peterson participated in practice with Arizona in anticipation of being the featured back in Sunday’s Buccaneers vs. Cardinals betting matchup at University of Phoenix Stadium.
Byron Scott’s Advice To Kyrie Irving: ‘People Don’t Forget’ When You Burn Bridges
Kyrie Irving made a comment about being in Boston that seemed to be a dig at his former home in Cleveland, and so far, everyone and their mother has had an opinion. The new Celtics point guard talked about Boston after the team’s 108-100 preseason win over the Hornets in Charlotte and referred to it as “a real, live sports city.” And while it could have been meant as a compliment for the Hub rather than a criticism of Cleveland, plenty of folks have felt the need to weigh in.
Manchester United Holds Liverpool To A Scoreless Draw At Anfield
Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by Manchester United at Anfield on Saturday as they resumed Premier League action. The Reds dominated the game for long stretches but couldn’t muster the breakthrough against a stubborn visiting rear-guard. Joel Matip went closest in the first half when he was denied at point-blank range by a stunning David de Gea save, while Emre Can spurned a good opportunity just after the break when he scooped over the bar.
Rex Ryan, Rob Ryan Won’t Face Charges For Nashville Bar Fight
The Ryan brothers are off the hook. Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan and twin brother and former defensive coordinator Rob Ryan were involved in a fight in June with another patron at a Margaritaville restaurant in Nashville. The man filed a police report for simple assault, but Nashville police spokesperson Noelle Yazdani told TMZ Sports on Saturday that the district attorney declined to charge the Ryans. The brothers allegedly assaulted the man after he wouldn’t leave their table.
Dallas Keuchel Ties Astros’ Postseason Strikeout Record In ALCS Game 1 Win
Dallas Keuchel joined some pretty elite company after his performance against the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. The Houston Astros starter tossed seven scoreless innings Friday and racked up 10 strikeouts in Houston’s 2-1 win, tying a franchise record that hadn’t been touched for decades.
Tony Romo Laughs At His Own Dad Jokes During ‘Thursday Night Football’
People used to make jokes about Tony Romo all the time when he still played in the NFL, but now the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is the one telling them. Romo made his broadcasting debut this season as one of CBS’ color analysts, and he’s received some pretty rave reviews, most notably for his ability to recognize which plays teams are about to make.

Cubs’ 9-8 NLDS Win Over Nationals Marred By Controversial Calls
The Chicago Cubs earned a trip to their third straight National League Championship Series on Thursday, but it wasn’t without controversy. The Cubs beat the Washington Nationals in Game 5 of their NL Division Series, squeaking by in a hard-fought contest with a 9-8 win. But one call made in the fifth inning and another in the eighth could have changed the outcome of the one-run game.
Cubs Owner Told Donald Trump Nationals Would ‘Crumble’ To Them In June
The 2016 World Series champions visited Donald Trump in the White House in June and chatted up the president while they showed off the Commissioner’s Trophy. The Cubs were in Washington, D.C., to take on the Nationals, and that’s when Ricketts made the prediction that the teams would face off in the postseason, where Washington would “crumble” to the Cubs. The Cubs, of course, beat the Nationals on Thursday in Game 5 of the National League Division Series. Pretty spooky stuff for Friday the 13th.
Grizzlies To Retire Tony Allen’s Number With Rest Of ‘Core Four’
The Memphis Grizzlies have been a successful team this decade, but they’ve never made the NBA Finals. Despite that fact, the team still will retire the numbers of all the guys who got them to the playoffs anyway. The Grizzlies announced Thursday that they’ll retire Tony Allen’s No. 9, a promise they made to power forward Zach Randolph before the regular season, too. Allen joined the New Orleans Pelicans on a one-year free-agent contract this offseason, while Randolph headed to the Sacramento Kings.
David Pastrnak Makes Young Avs Fan’s Night In Adorable Interaction
It seems like David Pastrnak is always smiling, so it should come as no surprise that he’s good at making other people smile, too. The Boston Bruins took on the Colorado Avalanche in Denver on Wednesday, and the 21-year-old winger appeared to make one young Avs fan’s entire night. The little boy waved to Pastrnak while he was on the bench, and not only did Pasta say hi back, but he also jumped up and down with the excited fan.
TV Station Typo Gives Broncos Tight End Jake Butt Interesting New Position
Jake Butt has been, well, the butt of plenty of jokes thanks to his unique last name, but the Denver Broncos tight end can’t seem to escape them even when it’s an accident. A locker room interview with Butt aired on KRDO-TV in Colorado on Tuesday, which normally wouldn’t be too out of the ordinary. However, there was a typo on the chyron identifying the tight end, and it didn’t list him as a tight end. So the 22-year-old’s been doing some squats, we guess.
Raiders Expect Derek Carr To Play Week 6 Game Vs. Chargers In Oakland
Derek Carr apparently won’t be out for as long as the Oakland Raiders originally planned. The quarterback was injured in the Raiders’ 16-10 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 4, and head coach Jack Del Rio announced Carr would miss two to six weeks with a transverse process fracture in his back. Despite that, Carr was back at practice last week — he was inactive Sunday, though — and Del Rio said Wednesday that the plan is for Carr to play against the Los Angeles Chargers this week.
