Comic book readers love the Last Daughter of Krypton for many reasons, but for fans, her heart-wrenching origin story and fiery personality play a substantial role. Unlike her Earth-raised cousin Clark Kent, Kara Zor-El is truly the last Kryptonian. She alone carries the culture, language and memory of Krypton with her. As such, she’s often a misunderstood character both within the DC Universe and in the general public’s perception. Why? Well, she isn’t Superman.

It may be the Summer of Supergirl, but Kara Zor-El isn’t the only character making her DCU debut. It’s not often the entire internet can agree on a casting choice, but everyone can see that Jason Momoa was born to play Lobo. Unlike her cousin’s 2025 film, Supergirl explores heavier themes of loss, anger and searching for one’s place in the world. With an intergalactic setting, Kara Zor-El is bound to run into many different characters from many different worlds.

In celebration of the Summer of Supergirl, I wanted to revisit a 2014 classic that, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated Supergirl stories out there: Supergirl: Red Daughter of Krypton by Tony Bedard, Yildiray Cinar and Emanuela Lupacchino. Supergirl is a deeply personal character to me as 2005’s Supergirl: The Girl of Steel was the first solo character comic book I ever read.
