Abstract Phosphite and pyrophosphate—reduced and polymerized forms of phosphorus—may have played a central role in prebiotic chemistry owing to their higher reactivity and solubility, yet their geological sources remain uncertain. Here we show that mafic–ultramafic rocks on the early Earth could have provided a sustained source of reactive phosphorus through seafloor weathering.

Abstract The igneous portion of Earth’s continental crust represents a long-term sink of terrestrial nitrogen, but the origin of the nitrogen in this reservoir remains ambiguous. Possible sources include magmatic differentiation of mantle-derived melts (that is, magmatic nitrogen) and/or the burial of biomass (that is, fixed atmospheric nitrogen).

The distribution of volatile elements during rocky planet formation

1 Introduction Hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur are abundant volatiles in the atmospheres of terrestrial planets in the Solar System and are expected to similarly dominate the gaseous envelopes of extrasolar rocky planets (Wordsworth and Kreidberg, 2022). Depending on the prevailing thermodynamic and compositional properties, these elements can be present in atmospheres in oxidized (e.g., H2O, SO2, CO2) or reduced forms (e.g., H2, H2S, CO) (Gaillard, et al., 2022).
