Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa (OFAB)

2023 - Agricultural Biotechnology

The OFAB Award is an annual recognition for journalists who demonstrate exemplary reporting on agricultural biotechnologies, aimed at revamping the agricultural sector and mitigating the impact of climate shocks. The recognition is awarded by OFAB in partnership with the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) AfriCenter, the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), and other key strategic stakeholders. The 2023 OFAB Award was given (I was awarded) for a story on Biotech Cotton (Bt cotton) and the farmers’ outcry over gaps in the seed system. Farmers in Kenya are still struggling with shortages and the late arrival of Bt cotton seeds, which negatively impacts production. The country imports these seeds from India and China.
